Hey all from AR! I have always had the desire to make my own pens because every time I went to a local market or trade show I would buy pens... Well, this week is my 5th wedding anniversary and my wife bought me an Excelsior mini-lathe from Rockler as the 'wood' part and I am getting the carbide pen kit from them this week also (I have a cheap set for the moment). I can't believe how much fun it is. I've been missing out! I made two pens this past week (one bubinga and one purpleheart) and I'm hooked. I've been messing with woodwork for awhile now, but this is a WHOLE new world. I can see how you can spend a ton of money and fast...

I'm excited about being a part of the forums. I've seen a lot of great pens on the site (before I was a member) and hope to get to that point some day!

Welcome! I also live in Arkansas and am new to turning. This place has a ton of information and people willing to help you learn the ins and outs of pen turning.

Welcome from Texas
I also have an Excelsior lathe & have been quite satisfied with it.

Dennis from AZ, welcome. Great knowledge base and insight here mixed with a little humor;). Time spent turning will give a lot of fun.

welcome, i'm in bryant, ar..check out the central arkansas chapter page in the forums section under 'local chapters'

Welcome from upstate New York. There's nothing wrong with a cheap set of tools. I still use my Harbor Freight set of tools that I purchased 8 years ago. I use the set to turn almost all my pens and other small items even though I have other individual tools that cost double what that entire set cost.
