Hello, I am Ed Tyler. I have been turning pens for about 5 years. The majority of the pens I turn are donated to my local Rotary Club to be used as gifts to our speakers. These pens are turned from maple flooring salvaged from an old mill that was partially torn down and then burned to the ground, The Avondale Mill. The building was historically significant in that is was the first building in the world constructed with a Sawtooth Roof to provide even lighting in the building. It was a good idea that had a few problems. The roof leaked. The building was well over 100 years old when it was salvaged.
Pens turned from the maple flooring have found their way to over a dozen countries, two US senators, a number of US representatives, the Governor of Alabama and his cabinet, Representatives in the Alabama house, Olympic Gold medal winners, Super Bowl participants, and many other people that are actually significant. There has never been a pen given to one of our speakers that was left on the table. They are viewed by the recipients as a treasured gift.
I make a small number of special pens each year for sale or use as a personal gift. It is the pursuit of excellence in producing fine pens that has brought me to the IAP. I will from time to time post a picture or two of my work but for the most part I am selfishly interested in learning more about the production of fine pens.
