Hey chief, though not the most figured wood out there, it still makes a nice pen. I have only tunrned a few pens from it. The blanks were from a hurricane downed Magnolia that overlooked a portion of the National Cemetery in Pennsicola Fl. The pens went to WWII vets from the USS Franklin who had friends and fellow crew members buried in the section which the old tree stood duty. I have never had any honor that means as much to me as handing one of those pens to one of those living heros. Do a google search on the USS Franklin and you'll see what I mean.

OooRah!

I would grab them sometime you never know how you are going to use the wood asnd it may be just what you need or want later

Southern Magnolia is everywhere down here in Georgia. I wouldn't necessarily use it for a pen . . . but bowls and platters are another matter. It looks especially beautiful when turned thin. You might even get lucky and find some pink spalt running through it.

I have some buttery golden yellow Quarter Sawn southern magnolia with hints of green, black and gray.
The chatoyance on some of it is magnificent.
Works like a dream. Smells good too when you work with it.
