I've been getting a little introspective lately. I get involved in many forums, across a wide variety of subjects (I seem to have spare time...), but I have yet to see any community that cares for its own with the passion or compassion displayed by those who work with wood. Not just us in the IAP community, but also those I see on some of the tool forums, the furniture-building forums, the carvers, and others like that. There seems to be an almost universal spirituality, if you will, that seems to accompany those who "commune" with wood, regardless of their otherwise diverse backgrounds or beliefs. Has anyone else noticed this, or am I just wacko?

I know this site has its "speed bumps", we all do, but as I found out personally this site IS the most compassionate towards each other in time of needs.

I have had the privilege of meating several of this sites members in person, and they were all terrific folks. Giving and friendly. I am pleased to no end to be part of this community, not to mention how proud I am of it's members.
The way things are these days, we need to see things like this to restore our faith in humanity.
You all should be proud.

Dude, you are definitely wacko, as testified to by your neighbor, :D;) but you are on the right track here.

I have always noted that woodworkers love their craft and are willing to share. My most memorable example of that is the afternoon Eagle spent in my shop teaching me a few very basic tricks on how he made his cartridge pens. Most of you likely don't know that Eagle made it a mission to give a serviceman one of his cartridge pens nearly every weekend when he went out to eat.

I have noticed the nature of this group, I have only had oneohter group that I've had a lot of interaction with and it would not be as good a format to be able to see the personalities but still there was a great deal of trust and caring there also. I have often thought about this and how does Craftsmanship or whatever play into it. OF course it is going to tend to sort people out into those that enjoy this sort of thing. But just as to why "Woodworkers" would posses these qualities is not known to me. I am just grateful that they do.
My most recent thought was maybe brain damage from breathing to much saw dust. OK I'm just kidding about that part. But I am not kidding about how grateful i am to know this group. Yes they will jump at any chance to share there craft, and this is not showing off there craft, It is a genuine desire to pass soemthing pleasurable on to anouther person. But I think at the core of it all it takes a very special person to be that selfless.

My neighbor should know... He's certifiable... Think it's time for me to move. ;)

Woodworkers are a good bunch of people. I have yet to meet on I don't like and respect. If I may quote:

2 Corinthians 3:18

And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being changed into his likeness from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.

Whether you're religious or not,(although it seems a great deal of woodworkers are) those who appreciate beauty, nature, craftsmanship, and like things, seem to be good people. I see the Glory of the Lord in every peice of wood, burl, and stone, no two alike, all thoughtfully designed to display His Glory.

I've been involved in a lot of forums, but have settled to 4. One is for lap band support and the rest are wood related. This group of people are even more supportive than my lap band support group. There are glitches, but we're kind of a family and all families have glitches. I've been here for about 3-1/2 years and have been warmly welcomed by a lot of members. I've only met about 15, or 20 IAPers, but I would love to meet more.

I've been involved in probably 6 other wood related forums and with the exception of the veneering forum (not a yahoo group), nobody seems to really make me feel at home, but IAP. A forum is only as good as its members and I've always been more than happy to be a part of this one. There are also quite a number of folks who share my spiritual beliefs and that is cool too.

Of several forums that I frequent, the members on here are by far the most friendly and helpful. I have never had anyone refuse to answer a question that I have asked because their technique in question was a "secret". I now make more game calls than pens, and while I agree that for the most part woodworkers are helpful don't go over to one of the game call forums asking the turkey call or duck call makers for any tips or tricks on call making (expecially the turkey call makers). You may get a little help from some, but you will also get a lot of "just buy a call and figure it out" answers as well. Some of them are scared to death that if they pass on their craft that someome will make a better call than they do.

This reminds me I really need to get back into turning some pens soon. I have not given any out to servicemen since Kelly's surgery. I was giving them out at the airport when I would see one standing there waiting for their flight. Maybe remembering this will get my heart flowing again on it. Just need to get all the sandstone coasters done.
