Picked up two hardwood floor samples from Lowe's last weekend, both about 4" long. Used Gorilla glue to make a "segmented" blank; clamped together overnight. Turned this afternoon...added a few kerfs for decoration...polished with oil finish.

These were $.25 solid oak samples...sanded their finish off after gluing them up.

Nice! Some of the nicest wood pens I've made came from wood floor scraps. I currently have a nice stash of Jutoba and Acacia that were flooring. Just rip them down the middle of the groove on the bottom side and there's usually enough (3/4") thickness in the center of the blank. It's a shame how much hardwood floor scraps end up in burn piles or dumpsters.
