Hello! Years ago when reading this forum I saw links to a little hand-vacuum-pump thingabob with a valve/nipple thing that you could mount in the lid of a big glass jar (pickle jar, mason jar, whatever) and draw a partial vacuum... I believe people were using it for stabilizing with wood hardener/poly/etc. Unfortunately three moves and 2 computers later I've long since lost the link...

Does anyone know what I'm talking about and have a link handy? Also, is anyone currently using this method, and if so are you happy with it?

thanks!

-Rick (who has a black palm blank that he suspects may need stabilizing)

I don't have a link, but I do remember the unit you're talking about. I think
you poked a hole in the cover and put a small piece of foil adhesive over it?
Then the foil acted as a one way valve when the air was drawn out.

Check other threads here, someone just tried using one of those hand held
pump units with vacuum bags. Reynolds Handi-Vac (I had to go check, they
were on sale for $5 at the dollar store) Someone else said they successfully
stabilized blanks in the bags.
Cool!

Yeah, that's the one I was thinking of, too.. except in my mind, it was
a foil tab. Same difference. Mine looked more cool though.

Either way.. if the blank is under the liquid and you draw out the air, then
when you release the vacuum the liquid will rush into the voids where
the air was.

When I bought my vacuum bagger on ebay a while back, it came with several canisters which could be hooked to the bagger via a tube, then would keep their vacuum. The cost for the whole setup was something like $25.
