Am pleased to make your acquaintance.

I am an utter newbie looking to ruin my life with yet another hobby that requires equipment (photography is not bad enough).

I live in Israel but travel (sometimes and not lately due to COVID to all kinds of places where my employer deems it important to send me.

I hope to read and learn here.

Hello Marc! Greetings from Nevada. I think you'll like it here. Plenty of motivation to spend more money on a fascinating hobby. Like photography, it's easy to start, and there will always be another tool to buy, or complexity to add to the next pen. Lots to learn here, and many great people that are eager and willing to help. Enjoy.
 
Welcome Marc - i got an opportunity to visit my employer's headquarters in Israel a few years ago, and while touring around saw a sort of maker space where people could come and use the shared equipment. You might be able to do some try's before buying if you have something like this near you. Have fun turning!

I am acquainted with SOME maker spaces here. Most are geared to production of small embedded devices and/or carriers for them (or smart-home oriented stuff).

The primary problem are taps and dies. But we shall overcome. I was able to make to kit pens today at a workshop-lesson, so at least I am starting to practice).
 
Shalom Marc and greetings from Nebraska USA. Welcome to the forums. Where in Israel are you from? I used to visit my Engineering Team there at least once a year when I was working for Vishay. Mostly to Beersheva and Dimona, but with an occasional trip to Migdal Ha'Emek.
