Hi, I'm a brand new woodturner. I'm taking a class right now at the woodworking school that shares a building with my local woodcraft. I have wanted to try turning for years, and my parents signed me up for the class for my birthday and got me a lathe for Christmas. I'm trying to piece together some basic tools so I will be ready to go after I'm finally allowed to open the box.

I started out wanting to make drop and support spindles for spinning my own yarn, but I have fallen in love looking at all the pens on this forum. I know that eventually I will start casting my own blanks.

Well Hi there Kate. :) Your very first post helped me out tremendously so thank you and a very big warm welcome from me in Wales UK.!!!!
Have fun with your lathe and I'm sure you will enjoy your 'quiet' time here on IAP too.
ANY questions ( except about LN  ) and I'll gladly help if I can!!

Kate, it sounds like you got sucked in by this forum the same way I did! Welcome, enjoy and you will learn a lot from the woodturners and resources here. I know I sure have.

Hello from Washington. When you get your gear set up resist the temptation to turn as many pens in the first 24 hours as humanly possible. Work on getting them perfect. Time on the lathe should be enjoyed. You also may want to learn how to do a CA finish.

Welcome to IAP Kate. You will find a wealth of information in the forum Library that answer lots of your questions.
