Hello my name is Randy. I recently picked up a Rockler Excelsior Lathe and have been exploring the world of Pen Turning. I've made a little over a dozen pens and while I've had several failures each has been a learning experience to improve my process. My ultimate goal is to hopefully be able to make some side money with this. My wife is very supportive and for Father's Day she gave me about 25 PSI pen kits, as well as a box of domestic and exotic wood blanks she ordered on Amazon. I love turning wood, also some acrylics. I can handle acetate, but I currently absolutely HATE Inlace Acrylester. Hoping to get at least on Easy Wood Tools with the negative rake carbide. I have the Rockler Pen Carbide Tool set (came in the bundle with the lathe) as well as a cheaper traditional tool set that I don't use much as I don't have a grinder to keep the gouges sharp. Looking forward to being in the community!

Hi Randy !!! . Welcome to IAP !!

Here are a couple of VERY good sources for penturning supplies .... exoticblanks.com ..... and .... BearToothWoods.com ....

I highly recommend that you give them ... I was going to say "a try" ... but it's more than that ... you will love their products and their service !!

Welcome from Montana Randy. On your gouges, I use HSS and once I set the profile I use a sharpening stone set in my vise to keep them sharp. I bought a slow speed water grinder from Grizzly and hardly ever use it. My stone and vise set up works well and it cost a lot less than the grinder.
