Greetings,
My parents named me William, my Marines named me Doc and I am a raging pen addict. I've been collecting pens since grade school. I worked for a commercial stationer in High School before I enlisted.
I started turning pens about two years ago when I came upon an old Craftsman Lathe at a garage sale. I was out of work on a disability injury and needed something to keep my mind occupied. After the first pen, I was hooked. I've probably turned a hundred or so pens. Sold a few, gave a few away to friends and family and kept a few. None of them have been "head turners" but most have been reasonably attractive functional writing instruments.
I"m really looking to "up my game" from a pen turner to a pen maker. Primarily, I need to replace my cranky old lathe with something a little more precise with better control. I'm hoping to learn some new stuff not in the books.
In addition to turning pens I also turn other small items (Candle sticks, stoppers, kaleidoscopes, Salt/Pepper mills), I'm a wood carver and scroller.I also make small wood toys.
When I'm not making sawdust, I'm an avid outdoorsman and motor sports fan.
I'm due to retire from the Fire Department next year after 20 years of hard charging into burning buildings. These days I'm the department's admin officer owing to that previously mentioned injury which left my spine held together with screws and plates in a couple places.
I'm married 24 years to the world's most understanding woman, we are child free but raise train and compete with Australian SHepherds and Labrador Retrievers.
Thanks for looking, we now return you to your regularly scheduled lives
