Hi, folks. I am a hobbiest. I've done some wood working over the years. My dad was a veterinarian who made, repaired and refinished furniture throughout his life as a hobby. He also turned pens and made furniture and jewelry boxes. He taught me woodworking and I have done the same. I did some turning years ago and now I'm at it again and have chosen pen making.
I've successfully turned several pens and am very interested in learning more. I love all the kits. There is so much available than that which my dad used years ago to make the slimline pens.
I've been a voice teacher for going on 41 years now, but plan to retire in the next few years. My husband bought me a mid-size lathe for Christmas and so I'm up and running on my newest hobby.
I inherited a lot of my dad's workshop anfter my brother passed last year and have spent the last year or so refurbishing his old power tools. I've got my drill press running great, the band saw humming and belt sander working great. In addition to those tools we own a small table saw, planer, and miter saw. Dad also left a shaper, jointer and scroll saw that I need to fix. The lathe he had was enormous and besides not working it would not fit in my garage, but I found an unused set of Robert Serby woodturning tools which I've sharpened and started using. I have access to all the wood he hoarded as well. The barn he had has loads of mesquite and Mexican oak, I found some walnut, maple, paduk, ebony and African iron wood and brought it home. I'd like to turn some pens for my kids, nephews and niece so they have something that was their grandfather's.
I am in the process of building a nice work bench and organizing my garage into a usable shop.
I made a few pens before Christmas and have done a few since then but it's been really cold here (for us) and my garage is not heated. So here I am searching the internet for information and ideas. I'm hoping to learn a lot more and to admire all the beautiful pens that y'all have made.
I am really partial to the hybrid blanks that are a mix of wood and epoxy, but I also love the inlaid and segmented pens. I love the look and feel of natural wood. The custom pens y'all do are amazing!
Below are a couple of pens I've made.
Thanks for having this forum.
