Greetings Fellow Human Pen Turners!

I am an adult-stage human of average height and over 200 of your Earth pounds. I recently became interested in pen turning: a perfectly normal human activity that is performed occupationally or for pleasure by humans and not by extra terrestrial hominids.

I am very excited to learn more about this hobby and find out more about our weaknesses as a species.

What machines do you use to turn pens?
What was the first project you turned?
In the event of a full scale alien invasion, how prepared are the human regimes to resist quantum baryonic accelerator technology?
How long have you been turning pens?
What is the best way to determine sex and social order without external ovipositors?
What advice would you provide a novice pen turner?
What kind of lathe do you use?

My goals here are to learn more about this hobby and not the enslavement of humanity.

Greet!

Welcome Nick. I have been turning for 8 years. I use a Jet 1014 VS for pens and a Grizzly lathe for larger items. Sorry, but I don't have answers to your non-pen turning questions.

Welcome From Arkansas!

Greetings Fellow Human Pen Turners!

I am an adult-stage human of average height and over 200 of your Earth pounds. I recently became interested in pen turning: a perfectly normal human activity that is performed occupationally or for pleasure by humans and not by extra terrestrial hominids.

What machines do you use to turn pens? Currently a Delta 46-460, and a Big Dog 7X14 metal lathe. I have a powermatic 3520 on order.

What was the first project you turned? A pen

In the event of a full scale alien invasion, how prepared are the human regimes to resist quantum baryonic accelerator technology? I have a illudium Q-36 explosive space modulator.

How long have you been turning pens? About 5 years.

What is the best way to determine sex and social order without external ovipositors? I don't know. Ask Sheldon Cooper.

What advice would you provide a novice pen turner? Don't buy anything till you ask and/or read the thread linked by thewishman above.

What kind of lathe do you use? See answer 1.

My goals here are to learn more about this hobby and not the enslavement of humanity. Good to know, but I was really hoping to get to try out my illudium Q-36 explosive space modulator.:frown:

Well, Nick, that is an unusual intro.:)

Welcome from Ohio.

Here is a thread with some answers to your questions: http://www.penturners.org/forum/f18/what-should-newbies-know-133010/
Too bad there isn't a thread for extra terrestrial hominids.

Oh, and I have a question for you Nicodemeus. Are you sure you should really be handling sharp tools?

My Son and Daughter-In -Law recenlty moved to Seattle. Now I am worried!

Welcome from Ohio.

I use a Delta 42-460.
I've been turning around 6 years.

Spend some time in the IAP Library. It is a wealth of information (about pen turning, not the human race)

Welcome from Southern California!

What machines do you use to turn pens?

An old Jet JWL-1236 with a slight alignment issue so a perfectly round pen is only a concept.

What was the first project you turned?

Hmm... It probably was a stick of some kind with a bunch of scraped beads and coves. It was a long time ago.

In the event of a full scale alien invasion, how prepared are the human regimes to resist quantum baryonic accelerator technology?

Poorly, but we do possess duct tape which is, I'm sure you already know, exactly like the Force.

How long have you been turning pens?

I've only been turning pens for a couple years. I've done quite a bit of turning over the years, mostly bowls.

What is the best way to determine sex and social order without external ovipositors?

Pheromone scent.

What advice would you provide a novice pen turner?

Take your time, don't rush things. Learn tool control. You can get some pretty cheap 1 1/2" square wood at Lowe's to use for spindle practice. I bought a bunch to help my son get an idea of how the skew works.

What kind of lathe do you use?

Um, an old Jet JWL-1236 that has a slight alignment issue...
