Looks like a great site. My daughter gave me a Jet mini lathe a couple of Christmases ago, but I haven't done much with it at all. Don't have much in the way of tools except for a large gouge and a large skew. Thought I should put it the lathe use though, and I've always wanted to make pens anyway - looks like fun. Glad I found this site - thanks ahead of time to all of the seasoned pros that have posted instructional material to help out neophytes like myself.

PS: Your daughter must want something!

Welcome aboard Steve...I started with a 1 1/4 gouge...bought a bunch of other tools..skews, parting tools, carbide tools, and out of the 500+ pens I've turned 450+ have been with the old gouge. I think it's a comfort thing and a personal choice as you can see from all these craftsmen and craftswomen on this site that use assorted tools to make their beautiful creations.
