I've been casting for a couple weeks now, but had yet to actually turn one. So here is my first PR/green and gold pearl-ex cast. Poured PR into baby soda bottles (if you guys have not tried these things yet, you really should...easy to use and doesn't waste much of the PR...and the blank is already round when it comes out!!!!! I'm just too easy to please :) Once PR was poured in I stuck a wire down in the baby soda bottle and twirled it as I was pulling it up and out.
Then pressure pot them for 1-3 hours. I painted the brass tub and inside of the blank with black spray paint and let them dry over night. Turned down on a cigar style kit from woodcraft. Let me know what you guys think!

Nice blank and I agree 100% on the Baby bottles. I don't know what you were going for but I think a white tube would make the green pop in IMHO. Looks great I just started using the bottles also. Haven't turned anything but having a great time making blanks.

Sounds like a great method in that the blank is visible while swirling it. Have tried 3/4" PVC but can't really tell what is happening to the blank.

Does the blank shrink enough to come out of the bottle easily(assuming PR is used)??

I had to use a dowel knock out bar just to break the vacuum. Then it comes out fairly easy and that was with no mold release. Next time I use mold release.

Instead of using the spray paint, I have been using a Sharpie. They come in lots of colors to accent your resin, they dry quick, and don't scratch off like paint does.

The baby soda bottles are great because you can see what the blank is going to look like. Also, I like to take a metal wire, wrap it around my knock out dowel (to give it a coiled shape) and place it down in the bottle before I pour the PR in; that way I can simply twirl the wire as I pull it up and out. Gives a neat effect to the colors. The PR can be a little stubborn to get out sometimes, but I have found if you give the blank ample time to cure (at least 24 hours depending on room temp.) all it takes are a few taps on the work table and that breaks the vacuum. Then just a few taps with a wooden dowel and the blank pops out.

Great pen and a great cast. I've been casting for a few weeks now and it is alot of fun. You really never know what you will end up with but in the end it always looks good.

Looks great -- I've been looking for a blank like this. Care to share your "recipe" to get these colors?

Baby soda bottles

Where do you get them, Wally's? Been using the round ice trays but they only put our about 3 inches or so.

Nice looking blanks and pen. I actually just cast 4 blanks the other day using 3/4 pvc in the same exact colors. i hope mine look as nice as yours once they are turned.

What diameter blanks are you guys getting out of the baby soda bottles?

Thanks for the links. I ordered 10 right away from the link LL Woodworks gave. I guess I should have waited a little longer, the next link was a little cheaper. Oh well, I got some now anyway. Not really that much difference in price. Thanks again. Can't wait to try them when the weather get a little cooler. It's been really close to 100 degrees here lately with high humidity. Don't want to try to cast and work in my shop in this weather.
Tim.
