Went out to the Crystal Coast of North Carolina this weekend, a 3 hour drive for me, but it was worth it. I can't say that I have EVER seen more beautiful water on the Carolina coast than this! Blue and clear, man what a beautiful place.

Fished on the pier all day Saturday. Didn't catch hardly anything other than a really nifty sunburn but did get to see a huge school of cownose rays (a type of stingray that is shaped more like a batray or manta). The pics below just don't quite do justice. These things were two to four feet wide. I would guess there were between 150-200 of them.

Oh, and went deep sea fishing the next day. Caught a nice grouper! Guess what I had for supper a few minutes ago!

Do you ever go to Stringray City and swim with them? I did.

No, is that in NC too? Sounds like fun (well, unless you're Australian).

Later that day we saw the two biggest cownose I've ever seen in my life swimming in the water in the the surf less than 20' from a bunch of kids playing in the water with their parents. Both rays were an easy 4-5' across.

All you need is some loaves to go with those "fishes". ;)

That's not a problem! The seminary has a bread shop that has bread donated by local grocery stores for us po' seminarians to go and plunder free, all we want. No joke, I eat Arnold bread, my favorite, constantly, great stuff! Especially the 15-grain and the Jewish Rye. Just look at that pic above-- do I look like I'm missin' any meals?;)

Nice fish!!! That must have put up a good fight.

Yes, I have a bruise on my arm to prove it! With grouper you have to lock your drag down tight and not let them have the least bit of line or else they will head straight for their hiding spot in the reef and cut you off. This thing was like pulling up ticked-off Mack truck, and it's actually only a "medium" size for a grouper in our area. You really don't turn a lot of heads at the pier until you come back with something in the 50lb range, and this one was only a tad under 13.

Nice one! We went out this weekend too. Was the start of snapper season on the gulf coast and it was great.Started at 10.00 o'clock saturday night and after about 200 miles we made it back to shore at 4.00 o'clock sunday afternoon.Had a great time and caught a few. Some snapper, tuna,(Blackfin and yellowfin)a 35 pound amberjack, some lesser jack,a 50 pound ling, 7 snapper ,a shark, and the weather was beautiful. What a way to enjoy a day.(or two)[8D] Love those stingrays.

Wish we could have found some grouper. That is some fine eating.

I saw people catch cobia from a pier for the first time this past weekend. I had never heard of that being done until I got to Emerald Isle, someone caught a 60lber the day before, and while I was there I saw a guy catch a small 18" one by casting a gotcha plug near a huge atlantic stingray that was swimming by-- a neat sight.
