Anyone who knows me, knows just how much I like big cities:(
But last night I got called out for an urgent breakdown in London. 530 mile round trip for a twenty minute job. But while I was waiting for them to do the paperwork to get me in, I took this pic. I do like bridges anyway, but this has got to be one of the most famous.
I was working about ten foot from where I took the pic ( no, not in the river!!!!)

Steve, while your photo is fantastic, I personally like the bridge better in it's hayday when heads were hung from it.[:0]

Mike

You mean to tell me they called YOU out, just to tell you:

LONDON BRIDGE IS FALLING DOWN,

FALLING DOWN,

FALLING DOWN

Heck, we learned THAT in Kindergarten!!!:D:D:D:D

Probably correct, but CrazyBear is an unreliable source. He doesn't even think london is worth capitalizing (Maybe it's not the capital, either).

In any event, looks like I'm going to learn some more geography here!!! Thanks!!!!!

Yes Ed, I'm afraid you assumed the same as one of your forefathers when they thought they were buying Tower Bridge instead of London Bridge.[8D]

The actual building I was working in is the very unique and controversial home (Town Hall )of the Mayor of London. The building is nicknamed the Hedgehog. Some say that it is called that because of the way it looks at night. Others say that it should not be called the Hedgehog because a real hedgehog has the pricks on the outside.[)]

Ok, While we are on the subject, then. Was the London Bridge replaced - is there a NEW London Bridge (that's not falling down)?

yes, the London Bridge is an unimpressive structure of concrete/stone that can be seen from Tower Bridge (the bridge in the picture above)...

It was originally made of wood, then concrete and stone, and was torn down, or fell down, a few times...I'm not sure what era the song dates back to, however...

WOW, territorial resident looking for Brownie points with the Queen, no doubt!!

(Thanks Andrew, I actually appreciate the info!!)

I See you are just as unreliable Ed. In my opinion London is just fine where it is. Weeeeeeeeellllllllllllllll South of the border:D:D:D:D

Oh, man. I was hoping to see pictures of you duking it out with one of those guys that wears the big fuzzy hats and the red coats!

I bet you could poke 'em in the ear with one of those monster pens you make and that'd show them! Stodgy old stoics, anyways! [:p]

Hey, some people paid attention during school, I'm impressed:D

Who knows why it's painted blue and white and what colour was it originally?

Who was the most famous person to have his head impailed on a spike on the bridge?

Ed will be giving the prizes to the first 1000 correct answers[}:)]

Chuckie, the sad thing is, I didn't fix the fault either[:I]

Hmmm...I didn't realize that i was painted - when I was over there, I remember the Beefeaters, the Tower Bridge, and seeing a concrete bridge a little further up...If I had to guess, I'd imagine that it has something to do with the colours of the Union Jack...was the red supplied by the impaled heads? :)

As far as the original colour, I'm thinking that the original wooden bridge was probably just covered with tar at the base where it would contact the water, and unpainted otherwise...no sense wasting paint on a bridge to cross a river in early England...

Most famous? Hard to say...I know William Wallace was...and I think Sir Thomas Moore was held in the White Tower and beheaded also...but who is the most famous? Ann Boleyn?

I'm a bit confused. The Tower bridge was built in 1894. In 1977 is was painted red white and blue in honor of The Queen's silver jubilee. Before that it was painted chocolate brown. So it is too new to ever have had a head impaled on it. London bridge however...

LOL, it seems that my recollection of what I learned in kindergarten is as bad as Ed, Andrew and Mike:D

I was thinking of a story of Guy Fawkes, but as Chris and one of my kids has pointed out, his head was stuck on a spike on Micklesgate, the Royal entrance to York. We think that Micklesgate is on Tower Hill, which is perhaps where the confussion came from.

Think all of us old gits should shuddup and just play with our lathes:( Don't you just hate getting old[}:)]
