Yesterday was the worst day of my life.
We found out on Saturday my beagle mix was in end stage kidney failure. We were told there was nothing we could do for him except keep him comfortable. So we had to put him on pepcid for his ulcer and anti-nausea medication to try to get him to eat. He did ok for a couple days, then started to get worse. Then yesterday at about 1:00 in the morning he had an extreme seizure, then started making a horrible howling sound. I could tell he was in terrible pain. We rushed him to the emergency vet and had to make the excruciating decision to euthanize him. That was the hardest that I've ever had to do. We got him when he was only five weeks old and he just turned 16 in Feb. We will miss him very much.

A friend recently lost her dog, and I found these, maybe they bring some comfort.

"Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened"

~ Anantole France

Just this side of heaven is a place called the Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals that had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carr ying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Sorry to hear about your loss. I can fully empathize. When our Redbone, Rusty got to where the only loving thing to do was to send him to his great reward, I held him while the Doctor gave him the shot. I cried like a baby, then while I buried him it poured rain.

Thanks to everyone for your kind sentiments. It means a lot to my wife and myself.

I too was there holding him to the end. I don't think I could ever do that to a pet again. It's just not the same without him. I miss him so much! I can only hope he is at peace.

Sorry for your loss. Kidney failure is how I lost my favorite cat. I was able to make the decision to end her suffering but was not able to hold her. A very good friend of mine did that for me. she is now buried at my parents house.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

Rest assured that he loved you until his last breath and he will be waiting for you on the other side. It's never an easy decision but you know in your heart of hearts that he is no longer in pain.

James, I grieve with you. I have 2 boxer/ridgeback mix boys that are 9 years old. I know there will be a day when they will need to be put to sleep. I just hope I am strong enough to hold them then. These guys are as much a part of our family as our own children are. Not much can beat a good dog. They are there for you no matter what. They don't tell you to leave them alone because you said the wrong thing and hurt their feelings, or because you have gas or bad breath. They truly have unconditional love for you and when you are down, want to make you happy. No other dog will ever take the place of the one you lost, but others can certainly be a great friend for many years to come. May you be thankful for the time you had, rather than angry for that time coming to an end. I'm almost in tears right now myself.

James,
After reading your post I looked down at my feet and as always there was Tony the Corgi who is our late life child and a tear ran down my cheek, I've lost a few dogs in my 68 years and I always say no more its just too much to go through and always a few weeks pass and I just have to find another best friend. As a famous Oklahoman Will Rogers said
"If dogs are not allowed in heaven the I want to go where they are allowed".
And Rainbow bridge always brings a tear.

James, very sorry for your loss and may it comfort you knowing he is no longer in pain. I know what you are going thru. When I was 5 I got a beagle, Lucky, who lived to be 15. He was my best friend.

I'm just so very, very sad hearing this. I'm so sorry for the loss of one of your very best friends.

I'm going out right now to throw the stick for my lab/border collie mix - Sneakers......

Best,
Roger Garrett

As a real dog lover, I understand what you are going through. There just is no other friend as loyal and uncomplaining as your dog. They accept and forgive you no mater what. I've had many dogs all of which were my best friends. So hard when they go, wish they lived as long as we do. The easiest way for me to recover is to get another friend to add to my list of best friends.

Very sorry for your loss.

We are very sorry for your loss, we understand how you must feel. We are dog lovers and one of our dachshunds is not doing very well lately - he is 14 1/2 now and has advanced CCD (Canine cognitive dysfunction, also known as Doggie Alzheimers). We expecting the worst pretty soon as well.....

Sorry for your loss James. It looks like he lead a full life and brought great joy to you. Can't ask for much more. My thoughts are with your family.

I would like to thank everyone for their kind words.

We decided to have him cremated so we would have him with us. I just couldn't bury him and then sometime in the future move and have to leave him behind.
We are waiting on his urn. We had some custom touches put on it so it will take a couple days.

Thanks again to everyone.

It is the most important task that we pet owners must complete. Our beloved friends depend on us to prevent their suffering. Your pain will give way, and the happy memories will remain. Your buddy waits for you over the Rainbow Bridge, never again to be parted.
