I visited a store callled the Koa Wood store today, and scored a box of "scrap" pieces for 30$. There are some really nice pieces in there, some of it odd sized, but I can use almost all of it into pens. There is one nice wavy grained sapwood piece, and a nice curly shiny heartwood chunk at the very least.
They had a bunch short cuts in the back room including some amazing premium grade stuff (for premium grade prices) that I didn't buy. Good looking stuff though, if I lived here, I would be cruising it pretty regularly. Some really nice pieces for pen makers for reasonable prices.
they had a bunch of tourist aimed wood crafts up front including some pens (nice segmenting too), well made for sure, including an absolutely amazing looking humidor made with the shiniest curliest Koa I've ever seen. It was stunning. And expensive too, but it was probably worth it, a true work of art.

I was pleased with my box of scrap though, lots of good wood, and fits more with my ethos of Badger Woodworks. That answers the question of where to get Koa in Kauai, if you happen to end up there on vacation.
