Can anyone recommend a good, consistent source of wood? I really like spalted wood. There is a website that sells some of the nicest that I've seen, but every time I order from him, I have to threaten to report him to paypal in order to get my stuff. I figure it's a side job for him and I can be patient, but for only so long. I think it's time to shop elsewhere.

No, but who's the cruddy seller? May be a good idea to let the cat out of the bag to save others grief.

The answer depends on what you're looking for. You'll get loads of responses with different sellers. If I'm looking for pen blanks I go to IAP members and ebay. But, when I'm looking for exotic wood for bowl blanks I love the stuff that "film4" sells in ebay. Here's one of his latest ebay ads http://cgi.ebay.com/ROSE-MYRTLE-BURL-WHOLE-CAP-TURNING-WOOD-BOWL_W0QQitemZ300041486558QQihZ020QQcategoryZ71235QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

He only runs one day ads in ebay. He has beautiful exotic wood, is honest and ships fast. But be careful you don't overpay since it's ebay.

Do you have any furniture makers or wood workers near you?
Their trash could be your gold.
Many times off cuts are more than enough for pen makers.

It is very difficult to be consistent with spalted wood. Part of its beauty is the unpredictability the spalting process produces.

Check Fangar, he posted a while ago a source (eBay seller) that he buys from.

As Al said, be careful...my wife bought me a "gift" from film4 (bless her heart). She saw a honduran mahogany that I've been looking for a long time already and bid on it because it is ending in 2 minutes...only to learn that the HUGE and BIG piece described is 3" x 4". He copy paste his description and does post the size...so read it well.

This is just my opinion ...... I think it's ok to relate the experience that we had with a vendor .... whether the experience was good, satisfactory, or poor. I think what matters is that we be fair in our assessment. Giving the facts in an objective manner seems appropriate to me. Bear in mind however, that there are a number of vendors who support IAP.

I agree. [^]

The vendor is Ipopperwoods.com his selection of spalted wood is very pretty and reasonably priced. the quality of the wood is good too, but he is very unresponsive to emails and VERY slow to fill orders. I had to finally tell him that I was going to report him to ebay for fraud before he would finally give me a delivery confirmation number. That's sad, because his spalted maple is addictive....

That name sounds REALLY familiar, but isn't one of the eBay sellers from whom I typically buy. Have you tried searching the site (including the archives) to see if others have mentioned him/them?

He uses this pic a TON on ebay. Been tempted before....

Yep, I recognize the name. There are a number of reputable pen blank sellers on ebay .... I've had great luck with "poeticsoul2" (William and Sabrina). Like anything in ebay .... beware.

I'm with you, Al. I have never gotten anything but outstanding wood from Sabrina!

Right here, on this forum or at TPS is a great source of woods. I have done quite a bit of successful, and happy, trading with members at both forums. Watch the classified sections or just put out a cry for help. Look for a local woodworking/turning club in your area. I get a lot of wood in trades, or give-a-ways, from friends. If you have a chainsaw, watch for new construction in your area and ask permission to harvest some of the wood, especially unique ones.

I'm going to jump in here and make a recommendation for a source for RECLAIMED wood. William Fourness at http://pennswoodsstock.net finds all sorts of woods and sells it as burls, bowl stock, pen and stopper and mill stock. I've ordered from him, and not only was the price right, he'll ship immediately - even before he gets your check. He's a good guy to work with. I got a batch of hydrangea blanks from him and they are gorgeous.

William has had his problems. He no longer does ebay and doesn't do paypal...problems in the past. That said, I have talked with him and think he's a stand-up guy. If you want some spalted wood, he will get some great stuff from time to time. I bought a mixed box from him and got some very spalted wood. I also got some of the prettiest cherry burl I've ever seen. My problem is he ships DSL and DSL and I are like this => [:(!][xx(]

Ebayers I use over and over:

peoticsoul always great
film4, nice stuff, more expensive
dwaincoats, beautiful stuff you won't find elsewhere.
eganlaw - great hawaiian woods, good prices, plenty of auctions, always extras in the box.
weatpennwoods- good prices on some interesting stuff.

i am sure you would have the same experience with any of them.

I get 90% of my wood from a mill that makes flooring. The wood they cut off to get select flooring makes the most beautiful pens. You would be surprised what you can find at these mills. Find one give the main man a few pens and tell him what your looking for and tell him you will give him a good supply of pens for his waste wood.
If there is not any mills nearby, find them online and make a call. If you looking for antique wormy chestnut here is a place you can trade pens for wood. http://www.appalachianwoods.com/index.htm Antique chestnut has been good sellers because of its history.

Good luck
