After years of writing instruments obsession, last few weeks it crossed my mind ''how about of making my own pen from zero'' and i've started documenting about wood/acrylic blanks,nibs,nib's material,clip models,pen kits,leathes,bushings,sizes,turning tools, basically trying to get an idea about what i need making quality writing instruments.Now i think it's time to make a move meaning i want to get a leathe.The problem is i don't know what to buy something crappy neither something too expensive (limited funds) so what i need for you guys is some brand/model recommendations for a newbie like myself.
Thanks in advance and keep turnin' !

Welcome to IAP Claudiu. You will find lots of helpful information here. Probably every brand of lathe made is owned by one or more members, so you won't be able to get much help other than we all tell you what we each have. You can easily search the entire site for any brand of lathe that is of interest and see what the comments are.

What is available in Bucharest within your price range?

Harry

Welcome from Ohio:

I agree with Harry:

"What is available to you?" Then we can give you some suggestions based on what we have.

Have fun!

Welcome from Canada!
When you tell us what lathes are available to you, please also tell us if you want to turn more than just pens. That will help you decide which size of lathe to buy.
Cheers
Catherine

Well i'm currently in Hamilton so i've checked Canada and USA.I haven't found any mini or midi leathes back home and that's dissapointing because of the shipping cost that i'll have to pay but it's ok as long as i have my leathe :)))
So these are my options within a 300-600$ price range:

Basic Pen Making Starter Set with Turncrafter Commander 10 in. Variable Speed Midi Lathe at Penn State Industries

W1752 Shop Fox 1/2" HP Midi Lathe - penmakingsupplies.com

Excelsior 5-Speed Mini Lathe, MC-1018 - Rockler Woodworking Tools

Welcome from Brussels, Belgium, Claudiu.

In my humble opinion, if you live in Bucharest I think the best for you is to look for a lathe if not in Romania at least in Europe. Now you could also ask for a small space in a container. In this case it could be interesting provided you don't pay too much for shipping and taxes in Romania.

Anyway, in Europe, in the price range you are looking for there are:
* the Woodfast M305 (Tour à bois M305 WOODFAST, Tours à bois : gammes Débutant & Loisir, Le tournage sur bois - Bordet )
* the Jet JML-1014 (Jet JML-1014 Mini Wood Lathe - Woodturning Lathes - Woodturning Lathes - Woodturning - Crafts & Hobbies | Axminster.co.uk )
* the Jet JWL-1220 (Jet JWL-1220 Woodturning Lathe - Woodturning Lathes - Woodturning Lathes - Woodturning - Crafts & Hobbies | Axminster.co.uk)

Now if you have a bit more money:
* the Midi Drechslerbank 350FU (Midi Drechselbank 350 FU - 0,75 kW / 1 PS - Midi Drechselbank 350 FU - Drechselbänke - Online-Shop - drechseln - Drechselbedarf K. Schulte - Drechseln)
* the Magma Lathe 175-FU (MAGMA fine woodworking)

The two lathes above are clones of the original Axminster AT1416VS (Jet JWL-1220 Woodturning Lathe - Woodturning Lathes - Woodturning Lathes - Woodturning - Crafts & Hobbies | Axminster.co.uk ).

There is also the new Jet JWL 1221VS (http://www.starbond-europa.de/product_info.php?products_id=1905 )

All the above lathes are quality lathes with generally positive reviews. Personnally I have the Midi Drechslerbank 350FU and I can say it's a very good lathe.

Thanks for the sites Mr.Crisk i found some good ebonite wood deals,as for the leathes i think the Jet JWL-1220 is my choice on a qualiti-price scale and i'll check for a price in a naval shipping container.
Thanks again and take care !

You're welcome Claudiu.
Just be aware of VAT + eventual import taxes (on top of VAT) + clearing fee when importing such items like a wood lathe within a EU country. Maybe you could try to register in the Axminster website and make a simulation for the Jet JWL-1220 + shipping cost to Bucharest. Then you will be able to compare.
