My wife and I are going on a 4-day weekend trip to San Antonio in a few weeks, just to get away for a bit. Flying in on a Thursday and back on Sunday. We'll be staying at a hotel near the Alamo and confining our activities to the immediate area, since we will be mostly on foot (no rental car). Of course we will hit the main sights there - Alamo, River Walk, etc. And no doubt I'll be dragged into more than a few shops.

Anyone know of any good WW related things to see in that area? Something unique, perhaps. Maybe some of the Texans in this group have some good ideas.

Anyway, neither of us has been there before and we're looking forward to the trip.

Cheers,

Kevin

Kevin,

Try this if you want to check for some exotic wood

They usually have more than listed on the site and I've seen a few nice pieces...but costly.

Wish I am still there to meet you. We do have a few members in San Antonio, but will leave it up to them if they are available to visit with you.

Have fun!

Kevin, Dario's recommendation would require a taxi ride since it isn't downtown. I don't know of anything wood related in the downtown area, but I haven't been in the downtown area in a few years. But the downtown area offers enough to keep you busy for a few days. Make sure you hit Market Square. It could be a bit of a walk depending on where you are staying, it's worth it. There is usually a local artist, or two, doing something out in the commons and they have one of my favorite Mexican Food restaurants... Mi Tierra. If you are a history buff, you could easily spend half a day at the Alamo. And to do the Riverwalk right would take a full day... or more depending on how much "window shopping" is done.;) And another trip to the Riverwalk needs to happen at night. I'm sure you'll have a good time.

If you can get to Alamo Hardwoods, you'll enjoy the cross section of a giant sequoia (sp) tree they have on display. Starting with the outside ring representing the year it was cut, they've inserted map pins to indicate the year certain historic events occurred, well past the 1700's. Lot's of fun to look at.

And they do have a large selection of wood...just costly as mentioned.

They had a boom during the oil days as folks getting rich from the oil fields would have their homes done up in exotic woods. Things slowed when the oil lost some of its importance in Texas.

Which weekend are you coming in? There could be a lot of activity as March Madness finals will be held there. Also coming up is Fiesta and lots of turners will be on display.

Thanks to everyone for all the great ideas! Now I have to try to fit this all into a few days. :D But then again, if I can't cover it all, it'll be an excuse to come back.

Cheers.
