Well, im going to the VA in Wilkes-Barre tomorrow at 3pm to have a gingival graft done. I am beginning to think that the dentists there are experimenting on me . Anyway, it's free. Just thought I would share with the group. If anyone has had this done or dentists who have done it, any ideas of what to expect will be greatly appreciated.

I've had it done and it SUCKS!

Truthfully...... It didn't suck that bad. I'm an extremely bad dental patient, I do NOT like needles one bit and I have punched a dentist. When I had my surgery done I was given a prescription for valium and was told to take one when I got up, one an hour before the appointment and one more when I got to the office. I was so "relaxed" that I fell asleep when the dentist was working on me. My dentist is a master of the Novocain injection because I've never felt one single injection and not one bit of pain while he was working on me. OTOH, the hygienist that cleans my teeth is a much different story; I think she enjoys dishing out the pain! She tells me that I have very sensitive teeth and without novocain there will always be pain but I'm not a dentist so I don't have first hand knowledge.

You have it correct. They remove tissue from the roof of the mouth and stitch it where the gums are receding. Get a box of tea bags to help control any bleeding. Make sure they give you something in case you have pain. Fortunately for me I didn't have much pain but I know of some folks who had a lot of pain. Generally they will prescribe a heavy dose of ibuprofen, vicodin & some kind of oral rinse.

Be sure to consider the risk involved. It the grafts fail you COULD make the situation worse.

Cav is a dentist, perhaps for a small fee he'll lay some knowledge on us?

Sounds painful. I have so many problems with my teeth that I can't wait to get the rest of them yanked out. I just can't afford the dentures so eating is going to be interesting. Of course it may help me loose weight. I wonder what a steak smoothie tastes like?

hope all goes well. I hate dentist also; recently had oral surgey to remove a broken tooth. Valium is wonderful and so was the Nitrous. the only way to go...
