I was just wondering if and when any of you give a pen or any turning as a gift if you put a note or description of the wood species in it. Something like......this pen handcrafted by......or this pen made from "Buckeye Burl".......

If you do would you kindly post a description of what you put.

Thanks in advance,

Grant,
I have given a lot of turnigs and pens for gifts. I will sign the bottom of a bowl or vase and wright the type of wood on the bottom. For a pen I include a card or somthing with a short description if its not somthing that is obviouse. It will help them remember later on down the road what they have and where it came from. Maybe get a sell out of the deal.

I add a card with the wood type, the plating type, the pen type, and the refill type. It helps if there is ever a question about the pen, they can read the info off the card to you, and you will know what they are talking about. It is usually on the back of my business card and I throw in a couple extra cards too.

I made up a sheet with the information such as wood type common/trade names, area of origin, and scientific name, as well as brief instructions on care and feeding the pen or pencil then when I sell or give away the pen I sign the thing with the pen.:) I have it so I get slips to a sheet of parchment paper. (looks real classy)

I had some photo quality business card blanks that I used for this purpose once and was very surprised at the results.

One lady wanted 5 fountain pens (with calligraphy tips) made from wood native to Louisiana. She wanted to give these to her friends in a calligraphy club. I printed pictures of the leaves on one half of the photo side and a description on the other end in a cursive script. I received as many comments on the cards as I did with the pens. But mostly it was how well the cards complimented the pens.
