I took a big air turning class that was taught by Mike Sorge last Friday. Not sure exactly why they are called big air, it may be the swoshing sound or the fact that you are turning a lot of air. Imagine trying to turn a spinning propeller, it's kind of like that. They have to be turned at high rpms and make a lot of noise. You definitely need to check and recheck that the pieces are properly chucked. Not that anyone would but you better not stand in the line of fire when starting your lathe. The cherry piece on the left was done in the class and is not yet complete, I need to do a top to complete what Mike calls a Pagoda Wisdom Box. The 2nd piece is a paduak triangular bowl that I started yesterday and completed today. These are scary fun.

Suburb work on those Cody! You were an attentive student! Very well done!

Mike does wonderful turnings! He has been to several of the club's up here on different occasions doing demos as we'll as workshops.
He does have his specialty in these pieces!

Both are wonderful Cody. Our local AAW club had a demo a few years ago with this and it was a fright to watch! His was a rectangular bowl about 18" long and it truly looked like an airplane propellor.

I love seeing this stuff!!!

Cody, have you counted your fingers lately??
Those are really an inspiration. I guess I'll have to try something like that after I get back from SWAT.
Thanks for showing.
