To introduce myself, I am a retired person who like many others, decided to take up woodturning to keep the brain cells active.
I have been a member of the Hornsby Region of the Sydney Woodturners Guild since 2002.
I have just started with pens, with a view of using some of the numerous off cuts. Like a lot of turners, it goes against my grain to throw out a piece of wood, no matter how small.
Hence Pen Turning to the rescue.
I am very impressed with the range and quality of the work posted from members, and I will try to get to that standard, eventually.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge, skill and work.
OMG...! Brian, I can not believe that I never welcomed you to this place, I sometimes wonder where my brain is, I know where my head is, but brains...??? they seem to go "walkabout" every so often, my sincere apologies mate...!
You have been a good sport to everyone here, and you never hesitate to give me your comments on my threads/posts, you are smart enough to keep out of the "heated threads", they don't really worth the trouble, really...!
Ooops, I just found out that, my thoughts that I had welcomed you already, were in fact correct, some how, you opened 2 "introduction" threads, and I welcomed you on one of them so, my perceptions were correct, even though, I maintain the fact that sometimes the brain walks about on me, more often than I would like, old age I suppose...!
I don't want to put you in the spotlight but, by having a quick look on your profile, based on my curiosity to see some work you have done since June 2013, I couldn't find any and I wonder, why not...???
There is no particular reason why I ask this question, apart from the fact that, you have posted very frequently on my threads and I wondered if I even saw a pen you may have turned so, it hasn't been that long since you joined it but, I'm most interested in follow your progress as a pen turner and see, if I can be of some help to you...!:biggrin:
So, what have you been up to...???
Cheers
George
Thanks George,
Firstly for your welcome,
Secondly for informing me that I had started two (2) Introduction Threads, I didn't know that nor did I intend too.
As you said I agree "It must be a sign of Aging".
Regarding my lack of Posts.
I haven't turned for quite a while, mainly as my "Car Evicted Garage" AKA Workshop, had been used as storage for our youngest sons possessions that were unable to go with him on several House Moves.
You know "Dad could you do a Favour".
Well the good news is that most of his cr&p has gone, leaving only mine in-situ.
I decided that I would optimise the available space by creating mobile work stations, where I could locate all my equipment relating to a function, for example "Grinding/Abrasion".So I have built a relatively small footprint mobile stand fully wired electrically, that has two Grinders on the top, with my Tool Sharpening Jigs , and a swivelling shared light.
The second level has in the centre a Wen Water Cutter Sharpener, Plus two fold away platforms, one has bolted to it my Belt Linisher, on the other side a fold away platform, a B& D Work Wheel and a Wen 7" Sander Polisher Fixed to the Platform.
Those Wen tools are some I brought back with me when we returned from living in the USA, and are 110V units.
On the bottom shelf is a Transformer for converting our 240 V to 110V, to supply the Wen tools , as well as other equipment I brought back with me.
Above the bottom shelf is a cupboard with 3/4' Dia dowels on the three sides on which I store the range of different grit Linisher Belts, also my other related equipment, such as Wheel dressers, etc.
I still have to do create the Drilling Station around my floor mounted Drill Press, and my 14" Delta Band Saw Station, both of these I also brought back from the US.
The drill is still 110V but I repowered the Bandsaw with a 240V motor.
I have a 44 gallon Grease Drum Dust Collector, with two 110v Fan and Filters mounted on the Lid, that I am going to pipe thoughout the Workshop.
Plus several small tasks related to my Pen turning, that I want to create, E.G Blank and veneer cutting, Pen assembly, probably blank casting, etc.
All of this is so that I can find what I want, and not have to move half of the workshop around.
We live in a Villa Home, with a single drive through Garage (that was, before I set up my workshop, and Evicted the car).
These projects are taking longer than they should, as we now have to base our activities around various Medico type appointments.
My wife in 2010 had both her knees replaced, then in Feb 2012, she had a Hiatus Hernia repaired, then 17 days after the operation she had a massive MCI, she straightlined twice on the Paramedics, in our bedroom, then once as they were putting her into the Ambulance, and a 4th time at Royal north Shore Hospital, where they were on standby.
40 minutes after she had her first straight line at home she had a Stent installed, and they put the Cardiac ICU off standby.
Since then of course there has been considerable Theraphy Sessions.
Not to be outdone, I had a kidney stone that put me into hospital, then an last March, an Operation on my left hand to correct a Duputyrens Contraction, which developed CRPS which is Complex Regional Pain Syndrome.
I think they should add "Accute" to the description then they could call it CRAPS .
This syndrome is when the nerves signal to regional nerves and your brain that they are subject to Trauma, and the Brain then causes the fingers to swell, restrict the movement of your fingers, so that you cannot make a fist.
The treatment is a series of Stellate Ganglion Injections.
I have had 4 so far under Day Surgery where they inject an Anesthetic and Steroids into your Neck, where the nerves from your left arm leave the spine then go to your Brain.
I am scheduled for the 5th one on Feb 6.
Sorry if I have bored you or have taken too long, but I don't particular like half pictures, so you now have the Total Scene.
It is annoying and frustrating that it is taking so long, I am like a dog straining on a leash to get it all done, and create some turnings.
In the mean time I am gathering a lot of things I want and need, and keep my frustration under control by participating and supporting where I can here on the IAP.
I think it is keeping me sane for the time being.
Thanks for your friendship George, and all the others in the IAP.
Brian.
