Some of you may remember several months back, I was asking about making gavels and instructions. I was considered to do one out of DI for an outgoing Mason this Nov. After meeting with the member he gave me the impression he didn't have enough confidence in me to do handle the job since it was new to me.

A few days later I wrote him a very nice email telling him that I didn't feel confident enough to do the job so maybe he should make other arrangements. I didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings and also offered to get the wood for him. End of story..........NOT!

I got a call today and he has explained to me he still hasn't done anything about this gavel and can I do it, help, or suggest anything. Isn't that just like a man, waiting till the last minute........oops sorry I forgot, I may be asking for a favor:D

I have the wood, can one of you suggest or do a gavel and plate (whatever that pounder thing is) for me at a reasonable price or even make some kind of trade? I'm going outside right now to try and mess one up but fear I need some kind of back up plan[:p]

Thanks so much,

Hey, if Don can make one, it can't be too hard??

Becca: A gavel is not much more complicated than a bottle stopper and from what I see in your photo album you can handle that quite well !!

I think you will handle the project quite well. Just be sure you have enough time to give it the effort that it requires. I've made a few wooden mallets/hammers for my shop and the trickiest thing for me was to get the angle between the handle and the head correct. You have to be a little careful in drilling the hole in the head.

I think you will do just fine if you don't rush!!

Proportion of the handle and the gavel is important. If you are a little off, the whole gavel will not look right. Look at some that are already made to get a feel for these sizes.

Thanks for the support and info guys. I started the head out a gorgeous piece of DI, I have 2 pieces to try. Have done extensive research and will hopefully get it done in a few days. I will be sure to post a picture of both when done.

Again, thanks so much for your support.

I would have been tempted to turn a test piece out of scrap, first, to get a feel for size and design before using a good piece of wood.....especially if it was a special piece of wood.
