I need to make a gavel and sound block, any ideas on the wood choice? The sound block must be a light colored hard wood and the gavel must be a dark hard wood. Thanks.

wudnhed, Sorry to hear about a bad experience you had in making the G word. I done 3 so far and had no real problems in the making. So far I am thinking using Claro walnut for the G and tiger maple for the sound block. Better luck on your next one[

Lignum Vitae is the traditional wood that is used for gavels in the US legal system, as it translates to "Wood of Truth"

Hey, no biggie, I can laugh about it now. Have you tried typing in "gavels" in the search engine? There's alot out there and you might get some ideas. Good luck!

I agree, Lignum Vitae is the best. thought it translates to "Tree of Life" though.

Try some Ringed Gidgee or any other Gidgee if you can get it. Other good timbers for this are Tasmanian or Queensland Blackwood, Mulga and Brigalow.[][]
