Hi all,

I have spoken with @Monty and am gauging interest in Tapco triple-start taps and dies to organize a group buy later this month. I still need current prices for everything, but the prices below were posted on IAP in November 2024, so I imagine they will be in the ballpark and a good gauge of whether you would like to participate.

The quantities listed are for the group to achieve pricing discounts. For example, if we order 12 units as a group for a particular product, we all get the 12-unit price. Please keep that in mind. I will start with M11 - M15 triple-start taps and dies. Once we understand what everyone wants, I will likely decrease the product selection. If anyone has more ideas for a particular product to add to the order, please don't hesitate to let me know. I will add them to gauge interest.

Please indicate by replying to this thread that you plan to join this group and which products you are interested in. I will organize this group buy if we can reach good unit discounts on a few products. I will try again in a few months if we lack interest. Please remember this is not an order but only to gauge interest. I will get the final pricing and get everything going by the end of the month if we have enough participation. Please PM me if anyone has questions.

- Mark

Additional fees on top of the product:

- A tooling charge gets divided among everyone involved, typically costing a few dollars per person.

- Shipping fees. The shipping fee from Tapco to me is divided among everyone. Everyone is responsible for their shipping costs for me to send products to you.

- An optional titanium nitride coating is available for taps to extend their life. This is generally about a $10 upgrade per tap available to you.

I am looking to buy a triple M14 tap (probably a plug and a bottom) and die right now - so if this comes together, I'd buy through the group purchase. The last one through IAP that Hanna ran was excellent - saved us all lots of cash!

I may be interested. I would appreciate some pricing on jowo taps and dies. Also, m10x1 and m9x.75 taps and dies.

I need to inventory what I have.

I am definitely interested, but will be dependent on what volume level pricing we reach on each item.

Clarification... The 12pc pricing and associated setup fees are for each item, right? So, for example 6 M13 Plug Taps and 6 M13 Bottoming taps is 6pc pricing on each and two setup fees not 12 pc pricing and one setup fee.

If we hit the volume numbers I'd be interested in M13 & M14 Bottoming Taps as well as M15 Plug & Bottoming Taps and Die.

M10 x 1 and M9 x .75 are readily available through many vendors and are inexpensive. I ordered M9 x .75 tap/die sets through Victor for $20 last week. I can get pricing on them through Tapco if there is more interest. I will add if more are interested.

Let's try it this way: if we can get 3 units of minimum interest for an additional item not listed, I'll get it priced and make it available to the group. If only one person wants one item, they can order directly from Tapco since there will be no group discount. Let's make our goal to achieve the highest-level discounts on most products that we order.

So, everyone, please speak up if you see someone mention an item that you would also be interested in.

As an example, if we order 6 bottom and 6 plug taps in size M13 x .8, we get the 12 tap pricing for M13 x .8.

I looked back at our order from 2022, and I see that there was a $108 setup fee for 1" dies and a $120 tooling fee for 1.5" dies. It seems to me that the tooling fee applies only once for each overall-size die. One tooling fee for all 1" dies, no matter if they were M9 or M13. One tooling fee for 1.5" dies. No tooling fee for taps. These fees were distributed evenly among everyone that participated.

$12.50 per tap for titanium coating on the taps in 2022.

Thanks Mark, that is all good news!

I would prefer the tapco made taps and dies, even if they are readily available elsewhere for cheaper. I have the m10x1, but would always like more if the price is cheap enough (via the group buy). I would really prefer to get some of the m9x.75, especially the dies - those are always hard to find.

I am interested in the in the M14 Plug and die. I may be interested in the M12 Plug and die if there is enough interest for 12 PC pricing.

I would be interested in piling on to what the herd wants. Since I tend to buy things that seem like a great deal even if I may never use them, let others determine the best sizes. 😁

I am going to keep this updated and post daily while we figure out if there is enough participation to move forward. In case some people are unsure what these are for, these are triple-start taps and dies used for cutting threads on "kitless" pens. If you are interested in participating, thinking about going in this direction but are completely lost with the options, please let me know and I will be happy to explain via PM.

I have participated in the last 2 IAP Tapco group buys, and find this to be the best way to get a significant discount from retail prices on these items. Our last group buy for triple-start tooling was in 2022, so this doesn't happen very often. These are expensive taps and dies and this is a great way to take advantage of saving some money on the highest quality custom taps and dies for our hobby.

Bump. I will try for a few more days to see if we can get this going. In 2021 there were almost 200 taps and dies ordered. Please post if you are interested in participating.

Bump up and the latest tallies. I think we still need to get more people to participate. If anyone would like to help, please spread the word in your pen circles outside of IAP and see if we can get some more traction to get this going. I think once we hit the 12 discount for a few products, more people will jump on board. Remember, this is only to see who is interested. You are not obligated to buy anything at this point. If you are waiting for the numbers to get higher, please post and indicate what you would like to purchase if we get to higher discount levels.

I was about to close this offer due to a lack of interest yesterday, but I found a couple of new people joined the group, so I thought I would give it a few more days to make sure as many people see it as possible. If we hit 12 quantities of at least one size tap and die and six on a few others, I feel it will be worth doing the group buy. It is the 12-quantity discount that will get each person around a $100 discount for a tap and die set from the retail price. Let's see how it looks at the end of the weekend and where the numbers end up.

If you think you will wait for the next group buy, the last group buy offered for triple-start tooling was in 2022.

(based on 11/24 Tapco pricing)
Retail for M13 tap and die set: $285-$328 + shipping
6 Quantity price discount for M13 tap and die set: $239 + shipping
12 Quantity price discount for M13 tap and die set: $201 + shipping

In 2022, 12 quantity discounts were achieved for M13 and M15. Quantity 6 discount was achieved for M14. We need to achieve similar numbers for everyone who responded to get the deal they expect from a group buy.

I received the current pricing from Tapco today, and the die prices have come down (~$5) since November. Tap prices are unchanged. They have not yet provided prices for the single-start items. Current prices are attached to this post. The current processing time is 4-5 weeks.

Saturday bump. One last push this weekend to see if we can get numbers up a bit more. We have now hit the max discount on M13 x .08 taps. We are closer than it appears for the dies. A couple of members have offered to increase their die number by one to push us over 12 if we can get closer to the goal. Getting a couple more people interested in M14 dies would be nice. We are close to the discount for 6.

After the weekend, if we are close enough, I will put together the offer, submit it to @Monty for approval, and officially open the group buy to start accepting orders early next week.

Great, I still need to see what I need. Hoping folks jump in on the single starts too. Did you get pricing on those?
I am still waiting on pricing from them on the single start tooling. I requested those prices last week. I will follow up with them today. I am waiting for those prices and titanium nitride coating pricing on taps for those who want the coating.

I got the rest of the pricing today and will put together the group sale details and submit them to @Monty for approval. I will hopefully get the official buy posted in a day or two.

Titanium Nitrade (TiN) optional coating for taps
This coating helps extend the life of the tap. It is up to each member if they would like to have their taps coated.

$10.35 to TiN each tap for M11-M13
$12.60 to TiN each tap for M14-M15

Single start M10 x 1 and M9 X .75 plug taps and dies:

I may have to switch my M11 set to an M13x.8 Die, cant believe it but I seem to have misplaced mine

I'm hoping there is some interest in the single point ones. If possible, because they are most likely the same price, will you see if they can provide bottoming taps also? I prefer those to plug taps.

Here is the thread to see the group buy:
