I sure didn't realize this!!!!! Someone sent this info to me.

I have been driving for over forty years. One would think I would have noticed the little secret on my dashboard that was staring me right in the face the whole time. I didn't and I bet you probably haven't either.

Quick question, which side of your car is your gas tank on? If you are anything like me, you probably can't remember right away. My solution is to uncomfortably stick my head out the window, strain my neck and look. If you don't do this in your own car you definitely have done it in a borrowed or rental car.

Well, ladies and gentlemen, I'm going to share with you my little secret so you will no longer look like Ace Ventura on your way to the gas station or put your neck at risk of discomfort or injury.

If you look at your gas gauge, you will see a small icon of a gas pump. The handle of the gas pump will extend out on either the left or right side of the pump. If your tank is on the left, the handle will be on the left. If your tank is on the right, the handle will be on the right (see photo above). It is that simple!
I don't know how you feel right now but when I found out this morning I felt cheated!
Why don't the dealers share such important information with car buyers? I don't understand why this isn't in the driver's manual? I don't get why any mechanic I have ever been too or know has even thought of mentioning this to me? The only possible explanation can be that all these people probably don't even know!

My car has an arrow next to the gas indicator that points to the correct side. Remember when they were hidden behind the license plate and you had to lift it to fill up with gas?

Damn,I had a 56 chevy with the filler behind the tail light,if my long term memory still functions it was under the left tail light.

And you had to turn the piece of chrome under the tail light for it to "unlock" and drop down to reveal the tank. It was fun when you pulled up to a gas station (all full service then of course) and watch an attendant that couldn't find it. It was always fun as a kid to hop out and show him. :D

Well Becca, I hate to disapoint you... This is Urban Lore. It's a shame becasue I really wanted it to be true, it's a huge pet peeve of mine! My comapny car is correct, my wife's van is wrong and heck my Jeep don't even have one!

A quick check of Snoopes.com came thru with the truth... it's false.

Uh oh Becca .... according to the IAP Forum Guidelines (my interpretation, of course!), members are allowed to commit only one Urban Legend Violation in a calendar year. Good thing the New Year hasn't arrived yet. You would have used up your marker. ;)

Your right :( While riding in LOML's Avalanche, the nozzle on the gas icon is on the right, His gas opening is on the left. I shoulda checked it out before posting. Great idea tho, wonder why the car companies haven't picked up on it?

ROFL!!

I am gonna fess up to this...

I had an old Ford F-150... had it for over 8 years... One day I was yakking with a buddy of mine... he was leaning on the window edge of my truck and I was sitting behind the wheel... and I made some comment about gaining so much weight I was gonna have to get a larger truck... he said "why don't you tilt the steering wheel outta the way??"

There was a tilt steering wheel... you pushed the turn signal lever away from you and the steering wheel would tilt...

I think that was the dumbest I have felt to date... maybe [:p]

LOL.. Mark, that design was a tricky one... don't feel too bad.

Here is one trick, and not urband legend. "Most" GM cars made in the last 10 years will display the odometer if you press the trip reset button while the key is off. Not all do it, some did sooner than others, but it works on about 85% of newer GM's (and a few other makes as well)

Becca, don't feel bad... I am one of those kind of people who don't believe a single thing that is sent via e-mail like this unless I have had a chance to look it up and most often, see that it's false. And IF you were foolish enough to "mass e-mail" it to me, I reply the same was. I point out that it's e-mail spame lore and junk mail, give the link where they can see before they send junk mail to hundreds of people and forward it BACK to everyone that was in that e-mail! [}:)] I don't get a lot of FFFFFFFFFFFFFWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW e-mails sent to me anymore. :D

My car (VW Passat) shows the gas pump, but also a small arrow pointing to the side on which the gas tank fill opening is. I guess those Germans are smart.....this is a pretty common rental and company car in Germany.

I'm not sure, but doesn't it also make a difference as to what make the vehicle.. I think Chrysler puts theirs on the right.. Ford and GM on the left, Toyota on the left, don't know about others... (At least my Ford truck is on left and my Toyota is on left..) On the Ford I never look at the gas gauge anyway... it hasn't worked since about 1993.. I just watch the mileage on the trip odometer.. I've only run out of gas once so far.

I guess I'm the oddball - I just remember which side the tank's on!

Mind you, I've been under the darned thing more often than I'd like fixing the stupid thing, so I've had more than my fair share of time to contemplate the exact location of the tank!

Andrew

I used to have a neat old truck that had a switch on the dash right beside the switch for the heater...flick it up, and you get the front gas tank, the back one was the rear! It was cool - like a James Bond truck! Loved that foot-click high-beam petal too!

Andrew

I drive an older (88)Jeep Wrangler and the filler is under the liscence plate. Is this why my gas guage needle bounces around is never accurate? My poor Jeep doesn't even have a picture of a gas pump. Now I feel left out.
Thanks for pointing out my cars faults.:D
Have a great New Year everyone,
Johnnie

My Ford Taurus is on the right side. What I would really like to see is a law that states they must all be on the same side, this way the gas station line ups wouldn't be like the pups breakfast.

Sheldon

I remember the high-beam footswitch as well. It was a neat light show driving down a winding country highway at 65mph tapping your left foot to an Iron Butterfly song! OK - so the girl I was dating didn't think it was so hot but the date wasn't going so well anyway!!

I personaly think they should be on the right side. If you have ever had to stand on a highway filling a car that ran out of gas you will see why it's nice to have it on the passanger side.

Johnnie.. on CJ has a diffrent problem, the plastic baffel inside the tank has warped. Now when I get to about a 1/4 tank of gas it will run out making right turns. The sharper the curve and the lower the tank the quicker it will run dry. It will come right back and fire up when it gets a slurp of gas, but it's dang near impossiable to run out of gas with it! :D

Bill you are NOT really that old are you??:D[}:)];)

I agree with you Billy, It makes it easier to not have to think about where the tank is.

Mike
