I only turned a few pens this weekend, but did dive into these cute little "pill holders" from CSUSA. So where can I get some really cool, dramatic burls that are at least 1 x 1 x 3? :D

L-R: Rob's Bois-de-Rose, Honduran Rosewood, Spalted Maple, Olive, another Honduran Rosewood, and Koa.

Everybody have a great week!

Those look nice. I've seen them in the catalog but never actually ordered any. Though about making a few for gifts. Any tips or tricks before I jump into a few?

BTW- the spalted maple one has especially nice contrast to it, nice work on a nice piece of wood.

Thank you! They were *very* easy and a lot of fun. A fast turn and easy assembly. I would ve *very* careful drilling though. The dang drill bit is 9/16" (aka HUGE) and I split the first Bois de Rose drilling it too fast. That's the only possible hiccup, really. Get some extra tubes too... that never hurts. [:)]

That spalted maple blank had be holding my breath during the drilling. The blank was just barely 7/8" wide and I drilled out way more wood than I left. But I got lucky on that one and it held together. The rest I was restricted on as to what "jumbo" blanks I had on hand.

Cool bunch...never tried them though.

If you need wood that size, I have some. I think you have my list...just let me know.

I have turned several of those and use one personally. I find it very handy. People "OOOh and Awww" when they see it. But they don't sell. Be warned, the plating is soft and wears quickly. I wouldn't use expensive blanks. Scrap whatever laying around is just fine for these and the other key ring projects.

Good morning Nancy. If you or a friend are going to use one for a while can you let us know how the gold plating holds up? I've heard the gold plating on the key rings doesn't last too long. I know a few people who would like one but I'm not sure on the plating.
Thanks

I sure will. I've given them as "thank you" gifts to folks who have bought my pens, but recommended they not be used with keys as I thought the metal would ding the wood. I plan on using one myself, so I'll see how it stands up to the inside of my purse. LOL

LOL Yeah, I got your list alright. [;)] I'll soon be taking out a line of credit for your wood! LOL I'm looking forward to the forthcoming batch very much. [:D]

My first turning was a keychain and I have had it for a couple of years now. The plating has not rubbed off and it looks great. I still get a lot of complements on the chain and have made some for gifts.
