I just noticed... People were getting all worked up because some members used words like "Guys" instead of workd like "Turners" or "People" but it is perfectly acceptable to acronym cuss words... To me that is WAY more offensive than calling a group of people "Guys".

I mean really... This is a family site is it not? Didn't someone just post a picture of a little Junior penmaker?

I don't know all of the rules of the site, so i dont know if making acronyms for cuss words is ok or not, but i do think it is pretty unethical on such a website.

Anyway... Sorry to kick up dust. I just noticed this phenom. and had to comment.

That is a very interesting (and good) point. Though, it doesn't really bother me, it just tells me something about that person from which I make my own personal judgments which I will not share.

I agree though, if this site wants to promote "family-friendly" I don't think it's a good idea to have those things. But that brings up another issue of managing it. That's a lot of time to commit to something that silly. People need to just understand that this IS a family-friendly site and use their judgment.

Somehow I started using the word folks a number of years ago and since it is certainly non-gender specific, it does not seem to raise any hackles on the super sensitive folks out there. I try not to get too wrapped around the axle on issues like this since in tends to divide good people who otherwise get along just fine. Just a thought.

It's really a hard line to draw if you think about it. Do we make a list of what words can't be used??????????
That would go over like turds in a bunch bowl-----more of that sarcasm

That's an interesting point. When i first loged into IAP, i said to myself "alright, a pen turner site" and i pictured in my head a bunch of old grumpy like me, with a nice belly and a can of beer on their lathe :).

And then i realized that i was in the left field and there where also women here, young adult and recently, more and more teenagers. And even more, from many countries.

I think that it's up to every individual to realize that the site is growing and that our hobby attract more and more variety of peoples.

Common good sense should gide us in our comment and we should keep in mind that our public is very diversified. Mistake will still be done, wrong expression will stil be used but i think that it's rarely intented and if it is, the moderator is very capable of making the difference and act.

Again, just my 2 Canadian cents (1.89 U.S.cents :))

The official policy of IAP is that if it is PG13 or less, we permit it here. You have to be at least 13 years old to use IAP according to the Term of Service. We don't get too wrapped up in this stuff but when I do see a curse word used that is not PG13, I edit the post and remove it. IMO, acronyms are the same as using the word itself. If you see something that bothers you, PLEASE feel free to use the yellow triangle and report the post. In the description, tell me why you are reporting it and I will be sure to take a look.

That said, I have been guilty of using acronyms on this site as well. I will admit, my language in real life among "the guys" is pretty bad. I am in construction and around very bad language all day long and it has worn off on me. No excuse, just reality and I am not ashamed of it. If I know it offends someone in real life, I do not.

From a philosophical standpoint, what is a cuss word? If you use the phrase, darn, is it not the same as saying damn? What about saying "That smells like Sh.."? Is that not the same as saying "That smells like excrement"? Just a different word for the same thing is it not? Cuss words do not offend me but when I am talking with someone I do not know, I certainly do not use them out of respect for the person. What happens here is that we all think we know each other and are comfortable with each other so the words tend to come out a little.

Once again, don't be afraid to use the yellow triangle to report a post if you see one that crosses the PG13 line.

I am glad this thread has had so many peeks and hits. I just wanted to bring it to light as an observation. I knew it would spark the debate and it has been a fruitful one i think.

I will never yellow triangle someone,(unless their actions are blatently against the rules) because i know how bad it stinks to get booted from a forum for what you thought was an innocent situation. And I too have surely mis-spelled words to avoid the yellow triangle.

After the "guys" debate, I started trying to watch my tongue. I am a "Gen X" kinda guy, so colorful language is all good with me, but when i am here, I try to think from the perspective of our youngest fans.

I just thought it was interesting that people were complaining about men using the word "guys" and the acronym for what society has deemed as one of the worst cuss words of all is acceptable. makes you wanna say.. WHAT THE....... anyway...

Very few people have ever been booted from IAP and we like to keep it that way. Reporting a post does not get the perosn booted and is confidential. It takes a LOT to get booted from IAP!

Think about this for a moment. Is it really the words that are the issue or the attitude/spirit behind them. It really all comes done to how the words are used that can cause issues. Cussing isn't a word in general but again the attitude/spirit behind the words. We can have that same attitude/spirit but use words like "freakin'" or "oh shoot" but the intentional meaning is still the same!!! But, we feel better about ourselves because, hey, we didn't cuss!!!! Or we kept it clean!!!!

I honestly cannot believe that a post like this exists. That's all I'm going to say about that. Unfriggin believable.

really?

Nobody is flaming anyone.

nobody (but you) seem to be getting excited or upset.

The thread is a civil debate on the allowed verbage of the website. A casual conversation about ettiquite(sp).

If you have something to say, you are more than welcome to drop me a PM, or even an email if you want to call me all the colorful names you cannot use here... I simply made an observation and posted about it.

I am glad that i can post this observation, even if it lessens some peoples opinions about me. Allthough it is unfortunate that people are offended that people might be offended by foul acronyms.

Will Rogers said it best. "You can't please all the people all of the time."

I don't have nearly as much issue with specific words as I do the tone, attitude or Spirit of the message. I do have a list of words that even I consider Gross and unnecessary. But even I will pull out that list just to be sure I use as many as possible at moment like when that real expensive pen blank explodes on the lathe. for no other reason than it makes me feel so much better.
