A Freedom Pens turning project is scheduled to coincide with Veterans Day.

Many woodworking stores are participating. Check with your local woodworking store(s) to see if they are involved. Get involved yourself and turn some pens for our troops!

This is a great way to support our troops and let them know the folks back home remember and appreciate the sacrifice our troops make to America.

Pens For Canadian Peacekeepers

Since we're an international organization, consider making some pens for Canadian troops also. :good:

Our own Jim Shaver ([profile]Jim in Oakville[/profile]) runs the Pens For Canadian Peacekeepers Project.

Any other programs going for international troops?

I've heard that about the only pens that soldiers deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan can carry are pretty much B2B slimlines, something to do with the pocket size on either their blouse or possibly on a piece a piece of their protective gear,

That doesn't mean they wouldn't appreciate a nice pen that is larger. They also spend quite a bit of time on their bunks.

Our local Woodcraft (SW Houston) is supporting this effort. If you bring in pens you've already turned, they'll replace your pen kits at no cost. Or they'll have 6 lathes set up in the store both days if you want to turn on-site. They're also providing bags and cards for personal notes to accompany the pens.

Our local Rockler is still in the 'thinking about it' stage, but will probably be motivated to do something when they find out what the competition is doing.

Two different stores on two different days, this could be a fun (and rewarding) weekend....

woodcraft in towson maryland will be taken part in wonderfull way of showing our support. we plan on starting with 150 kits for customers and some employees to turn. if you are in the area stop bye.

We will be supporting this

The Houston Rockler store will be supporting this that day. Come on in and turn a pen, or bring pens you have already done to the store. We will make sure they get to our troops.

One of the other things Jim does is try and have a letter of support and encouragement to go with each pen as it's shipped. I don't know whether the freedom pens project does that or not but it's worth a try. I think the guys appreciate the letters of support more than the pen.

The Jacksonville, FL Woodcraft is sending pens also. We had some pre-done by our local turning club. Also, we had lathes set up today for anyone to turn on. We will also be doing it Friday and Saturday this week as well. We're at about 300-350 done already. Anyone in the area is welcome to join us this weekend.
