Well, we survived the ice storm in Western KY. This is the worst disaster this end of the state has seen since the 1937 flood.

We had over 1500 power poles down in the area, and at one point had over 50,000 without power. Some still have no power after three weeks, but that number is dwindling daily.

Now, we have to deal with all of the storm debris in the area. I have never seen so much free wood available. Each day as I drive around, I almost cry at the amount of beautiful wood laying by the road waiting on debris cleanup companies. I wish I had space to store and dry all of this, but I can barely manage the small amount I have in my yard.

If anyone lives within close proximity to zip code 42001, I would invite you to grab a trailer and a chainsaw and drive through and load up. There is plenty of all types of wood along the roadside. Just ask the homeowner if you can pick up some of the trash along their curb.

The interesting thing is that we have tree services from as far as Florida offering their services to clean up debris. I have heard estimates for some yards that go as high as $40,000! I will clean up what I can myself, and hire a LOCAL company to clean up the larger trees that I cannot handle. I would rather that my money stay in the local community, and not go to someone looking to profit from the disaster.

We are fine. We were without power for only 3 days in my neighborhood, and I spent most of that time at the hospital where I work. Those 32-hour shifts can be nuts!

Same ridiculous prices being quoted from probably the same out of state companies that were down here right after Ike came visiting. I guess that they can get enough work at those outrageous prices from insurance companies to make it worth the trouble. They don't get any of my money though, I know too many local people who are happy to do the work at a reasonable price.

I'm in Southern Indiana, not too far from you, which means that we have thousands of trees and limbs down too. Thanks, but no thanks, I don't need any more wood right now. I had 28 trees and hundreds of large limbs down in my yard. The trouble is that they were mostly pine, maple, cedar and sasafrass. There is not much interesting wood on the ground. There are a few dogwoods, some of the cedar is nice, but mostly they have no value. My mess is mostly cleaned up, there are several large stacks of firewood. I've been helping neighbors and giving my chainsaw a serious wookout. After all the limbs cleaned up there are damaged trees everywhere. It is sad to see how bad the trees look after the clean-up.
