Folks,

I am not a penmaker. I make cutting boards and charcuterie boards.

I do have a boatload of black walnut and hickory that I has cut down, dried outside for 2+ years, sawmilled and then dried for an additional 2 years indoors.

Being a novice at getting wood milled, I have a large amount of smaller pieces, nominally 3/4" to 6/4" that are too small for me to use.

All are very nice pieces of wood and I would hate to send them to the burn pile !

I would like to offer them to the group, free of charge as long as I get postage paid.

I will cut them to any size that is required and package them (most likely in pre-used Amazon boxes).

The only requirement is that I get reimbursed for the shipping cost.

That's it, no strings attached, I just hate to see this wood go to waste.

Please let me know if this is the proper forum for this and it does not violate your rules.

I have attached photos of the stock in addition to the finished product of a cutting made from the black walnut stock.

I would consider taking some of the walnut off your generous hands, but my wife has made it clear I already have enough wood (she's right, but I can't help myself). I have more wood than I will be able to use in 2 lifetimes, but thank you for the offer.

I'll take a medium to large sized box of 1/2 walnut 1/2 hickory. I would prefer stuff that is 1 inch thick (square)x 6 inches long (1x1x6). Just let me know what you have and what shipping to 80601 would be. Thanks for the great offer.

I would be interested in some 4/4 x 7" and 6/4 X 8" stock in both Walnut and Hickory. Please let me know how much a package with 6 of each size and species would be.

As far as the PM question, on the top right-hand side of the page you will see your log-in name followed by an envelope and a bell. Click on the envelope to start or respond to a PM (called a Conversation on this site).

Thank you for assisting me on the PM question, I thought that I was being stupid (obviously, I was).

I'll cut to your specifications, weigh it out packaged and let you know, I just need a zip code for the estimate.

If you let me know how many of each you would like, I can cut them to size and give you a postal service estimate for shipping.

Please chime in anyone else : If I am going to be firing up the planer and table saw (and make a bunch of sawdust), is 1 x 1 x 6 a relatively universal size ?

did your wife steal your account to browse IAP?

I would be interested in a mixture of both walnut & hickory. The 1x1x6 is a good size for pen blanks. That size would be fine for me also. Let me know shipping cost to 76667. Thanks for the generous offer.

I'm probably a day late and a dollar short, but if you have any left I would love some. 3/4" x 5" would be awesome. If possible matching species pairs work best as we make fountains.

I would be interested in a medium or large flat rate box packed out with 6/4 mix and 4/4 hickory. You could just cut the sticks full length of the box.

Like I mentioned before, I am not a pen person.

I did take the liberty of cutting the black walnut into 1x1's, length to follow.

Please find attached the picture of the raw stock, in addition to the stock cut into 1x1's.

The 1x1's were photographed when wet with water, just to show the color when finished.

Also find a picture of our dining room table that was made from the same stock.

I will work on the Hickory tomorrow.

USPS flat rate :

I'm not sure how much you want, but if it fits into these parameters, this is probably what you would pay.

Ok - like Michelle (Hippie3180) I am late to the party, but I would go for a medium Priority Mail flat rate box to Nebraska, 68601. I typically use 3/4 x 3/4 x 5 but 1 x 1 by 6 inches (or as long as will fit in the box) would be good for me. Walnut is preferred, but a mix would be OK with me too. - Thanks, Dave.

28173. Just noticed your live in Avondale. I moved to NC from Oxford, PA in 2008. Couldn't stand the smell of the mushroom mulch.šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

20 or 25 of each, whatever you have is fine and fits in either a medium flat rate box or if you have a bunch, whatever will fit in a large box is fine. Just let me know.

If you have thicker pieces, say 6/4 instead of 4/4, then use the general rule of thumb: make the blanks square x 6 inches long. Typically, pen turners want a minimum of 5 inches of length for a 2 piece pen. I've always found that to be too tight on clearance for trimming, so that is why I prefer 6 inch lengths. If you divide your board up and have a short off cut at the end, just make sure it is at least 2.75 or 3 inches in length. A lot of folks turn a single piece pen, commonly referred to as a "Sierra", but different brands have different names, wall street 2, monarch, El Roy, diplomat, and others. Hope this helps you in planning out your cuts. I wouldn't plane anything down to a thickness, just cut what you have into "square" by requested length. Less work for you and less sawdust.

I cut some straight black walnut to 3/4" x 1".

The pictures are attached.

They fit into a USPS small box for about $10.50.

Not only they are from matching species, but these are from the same tree (harvested sustainably, since the trees were actually going to end of life anyway).

Let me know if it OK to ship.

Sorry, but I forgot, can you PM your address so that I can ship this out to you ?
