I've only made one fountain pen before, but someone's asked me to make them one and I have a question. Do all fountain pens use a standard ink cartridge? When I looked at some pen kits at CSUSA, they don't seem to list or maybe just don't sell, the ink with them, like they list on rollerballs and regular ink pens. The person who wants me to make it said he's had fountain pens before but never knew where to get the ink cartridges. Can anyone steer me in the right direction? I may be totally not understanding something about fountain pens, since I don't use them. Thanks!

Angela pm Anthony (penworks) he sells ink cartridges very reasonably.

ALl FP's that I know of come with cartridges. Berea's FP's come with cheap converters as well.

Pretty much every office supply store sells the standard ink cartridges, mostly only in black and blue. If you want something special you have to go to a specialty store for pens or shop online, like here:

They have a wide variety of colors.

The Jr Gentleman fountain pen uses Waterman cartridges #52001. they are the long ones so the ink surely lasts longer, I have made several of their fountain pens and the prople that use them really like them. I have two that I use on a regular basis.

Correct me if I am wrong; but I seem to remember that there are two international cartridges, a short one and a long one. The short one is the one more commonly seen. Perhaps the Waterman cartridge is just the long international cartridge??

angboy:

There are three types of ink cartridges shown on Berea's webb site.

I think Hut, and also PSI carries them.

Go to the 'Links' at the top of the page. I don't know how to place a link to the thread.

I have tried all the major brands and some other specialized brands. Of the lot, Waterman cartridges seem to be the most interchangeable (Doesn't hurt have a a few dowzen Waterman either). The long cartridges last pretty good, and most decent office supply or stationary stores carry them. Waterman also has a decnet spectrum of colors from which to choose. I use the liz taylor violet and bermuda blue mostly. Downside is that there is no one perfect method for storing open cartridges. Oce you peirce it, you really should use it until it has emptied. I'm sure there is a way to store/reseal them, but I'll leave that thread to some of my more knowledgeable colleagues here. The short cartridges are nice in that most pen barrels are designed to hold two cartridges, one in use and a second as a spare. Just invert it and drop it into your barrel, then drop your primary cartridge in, seal end towards the feed tube. As you screw your nib into the barrel, the feed tube will pierce the seal and you're ready for action. YMMV. Less waste
