Where is a good place to purchase a GOOD Forstner bit for a peppermill, I have a set I purchased from Harbour Freight but they are not the best, I am also looking for a bit extension to make the peppermill, I had two but the set screw on them came loose and the bit gets stuck in the peppermill.

I've gotten one from both Home Depot and from Woodcraft. Both of them were very nice. I'd buy hammers and screwdrivers from HF, but I wouldn't trust anything that needs to maintain an edge like drill bits or forstner bits. I had some of their brad point drill bits and the things are horrible. If I had a Drill Doctor I'd cut them down and repoint all of them.

To say HF bits of any kind "are not the best" is very cheritable! The fact is, they're crap, but they don't cost much so people buy them. I've done it before, but don't do it much anymore because I know I'll be disappointed.

For me, I like to pay once, have tools that work for me instead of the other way around, so I bit the bullet and got all Bormax by FAMAG forstner bits. They're German, in my opinion the best money can buy, and I can't recall what I paid for them, nor do I care! They cut perfectly, I've had them a long time and not had to sharpen them and I love them.

You can find them at www.traditionalwoodworker.com, and you can get German made extensions there too, under drill accessories. But I will say that if you don't crank the set screws down, and fail to clean out the hole often, or let things get too hot, these will spin the same as anybody's. I shoot air into the hole the entire time I'm drilling and clean out constantly.

Hope that helps!

I got my set fromm MLCS, the router catalog that comes with the PSI catalog. I've purchased several things from them and so far have been satisfied with both quality and price.

Colt has their new design of Forstner bits coming out soon, so they say, (they are available in Europe) and after watching the video of how well the work I am waiting for these to become available. :)

Rockler had the 22pc set -Reg &119.95 - for $39.99. Just got a set. But it looks like the sale is off. Must have just gone off. I'd call them & see if they would give you the break.

I only use 3 sizes and bought all of mine at the local Woodcraft store. Unless you just want the set, it's not worth the extra cash, plus the set probably doesn't have two of the sizes called for in the instructions... I use a 1 3/4 (probably in the set), a 1 9/16 and 15/16 sizes.. these won't be in most sets. If memory serves me (and it usually doesn't) I think they were about $8 to $20 each.

BTW, most instructions call for a fourth size between the 1 9/16 and the 15/16, but I don't use it.. I drill through with the 1 9/16 for a larger capacity peppermill.
