Here is a response I received form my hosting provider when inquiring about a MySQL database backup, and problems accessing the site (major database errors), from what they say in earlier post they are synchronizing the disk the MySQL data resides on and it will cause slowness. ok so I do a backup and get a 1.3 mb sql file, I am expecting a 3.2+ mb sql file based on last backup. ok anyway here is the response I recieved:

Hello Tracy,

We are looking into the issue.

May I request you to check it after next some time? It should be alright
shortly.

Thanks for your continuing patience.

Kind regards,

Either they COMPACTED your database, and you're fine.. OR, you're missing a bunch of data.

Maybe they plan on restoring something from yesterday or earlier.. I would push harder for a suitable response. (I'm in Customer Service, and its OBVIOUS that the tech didn't read your original request very closely.)

My 2cents.. You are getting database errors - and they are "syncronizing" the disk. This most likely means that they had a disk fail and are re-pulling it from a mirror copy. If you havn't made recent changes to your database, you'll be ok.. if you had recent changes you might be a bit more concerned.

Mike according to the check sums I am missing a lot of data, it is just their response that has me laughing ...

Alphageek, from what I see and the information they have given me is the SQL server is way overloaded, and the cluster it is on is not able to maintain connections at all to the sql server.

The sql database I need the backup from is complete but I cannot maintain a connection to it long enough to get a full back up on my own. or have my PHP CMS site access it without timing out at the SQL server.
