I would like to hear some varying opinions on the following:

On September 5th, 2009, the Navy Midshipmen will come to Columbus, Ohio to play the Ohio State Buckeyes in a football game. There has been a local media attempt to limit booing/jeering/smack talking of the Middies because they are our armed service men, and will protect and defend us in the future.

The retort to that by others is that on that date, at that time they are a football team looking to beat another football team, regardless of the fact that they will one day serve in our armed forces and defend our freedoms.

I'm kind of on the fence on this one, and I see both sides.

On one hand they are doing something that many won't do, or couldn't imagine doing, and deserve all the respect that that involves.

On the other hand, they are just football players, and as such should be treated as any other opponent would be treated that came in to the 'shoe hoping to beat my Buckeyes.

That being said, I don't ever boo unless a player does something heinous and dirty to begin with.

What do you guys and gals think?

Hmmmm........my first reaction is its a football game, they become players on the field, get over it. If I over think it, which is what I think is wrong with our country part of the time, I say yes, they deserve the respect. Its all part of the game of football, people are going to cheer or boo and I don't think ( hope) the players don't take it too seriously.

How is that for joining you on the fence, LOL!!!

Why do the two (respect and booing/gamesmanship) have to be separate issues? I can have tremendous respect for someone "outside the lines", but done have to like them "between the lines". That's the difference. It's a game. Root for your team.

That being said, there are things that ARE out of line, but I doing see a little smack talk or booing being one of them. However, I'm one to root more for my team than against the other.

I agree with your philosophy -- heinous and dirty by either team gets booed but nothing else -- and, the officials, of course because they are always doing something heinous.

I'm not much of a heckler at football games but I'm not sure it should make a difference just because they are playing for Navy. I am a vet and I wouldn't be offended. You wouldn't be booing them because they are in the military, you might be booing them because they are football players.

Ok..I have to admit I made a little white lie. I always boo michigan, but that's just because I have too!

Before they take the field, they should be shown respect and admiration, even up to the time of the kick-off, after that root for your team,

It's a game, folks. There is a certain amount of jeering/booing/smack talking that goes into that.

I have a similar situation. I'm a diehard Univeristy of Alabama Fan, born and raised. My daughter decided to go to that OTHER School.

Now, there are very few rivalries worse that Alabama and Auburn, and the feelings of fans of each run deep. But I've never doubted for a moment that Auburn was anything other than a great school. For her major, it's THE BEST in the South-East (Pre-Vet).

How do we get around it? I insult her team and she insults mine, and on the weekends we sit down and watch both games and have a great time.

Believe me, these fine kids who are the protectors of our freedoms are not going to get upset if someone from the other team talks smack. They're man enough to take it, and the realize that it's all part of the game.

I don't care what school they played for. When they put on the uniform, they'll have my respect and my thanks.

Anyone who works hard enough to make the cut, puts on the pads and expends energy on the field to advance their team deserves respect. Respect is withheld when an individual steps outside the bounds of good sportsmanship. As a Buckeye fan and a Navy fan, I'd cheer excellent play and honest effort. Always.

My favorite part-time job ever (and I have had a LOT of them) is parking cars at the 'Shoe for the past three seasons. One of the perqs (make that the only perq) is getting into each home game.

I'll cheer Navy into the game, then it will be "Go Bucks!"

Ohio State fans are tough. They even boo their own team if they feel like they are not playing well enough. There's nothing quite like it. Over 100,000 fans booing their own team. You have to experience it to understand. I just hope the Buckeyes don't become their own worst enemy as they sometimes do. One thing you have to remember, the Navy cadets are not in this to become professional athletes, although couple of notables did (Staubach in football & Robinson in basketball). Most of the OSU players dream of becoming stars in the NFL. The Buckeyes have the nod in talent but the Midshipmen have the nod in heart. Boo them if you want to, after all it's just a game.

First of all, I think it's absolutely idiotic to Boo the other team when they come onto the field -- even long-standing rivals.
After all, if there weren't other teams, there'd be no game.
It's just stooopid!

Having said that, IF an opponent commits some unsportsmanlike foul or cheats --
things like spearing, malicious late hits, and serious face-masks, they deserve to be booed.

Finally,

Go Gators

Being raised in Florida I've been a Gator fan and a 'Nole hater, had a brother-in-law that was a Seminole and we would bash each other endlessly but we never booed them when we went to games, root against sure, holler and scream when something the other team did, again of course but never booed........unless you call clapping, jumping up and screaming "see I knew you couldn't hold on to a ball with velcro Mr. Thumbs" when a 'Nole fumbled booing.

Since I have been on the no-booing side of this issue for many years now my opinion is don't boo Navy or any other team when they take the field. As a player I rarely heard the booing and If I did it didn't bother me, Im sure the Navy players would tell you the same.
As a Fan it has always bugged me to hear our crowd boo a visiting team as they take the field. It just seems classless IMO. We travel to many road games throughout the Big 12 each year and it is always a neat thing when your team doesn't get the boo when they take the field. A cheap hit or a obvious bad call...I say let em have it.

I believe it is directly proportional to the amount of beer consumed, and the inverse of age. I.e. I've never seen anyone over the age of 35 boo an opposing team taking the field inside the 'shoe unless they were blitzed from tailgating or between the age of 16 and 25.

Wlhat a hell of a game, no booing there. Navy almost pulled it off. What has me booing is ESPN didn't show the half time show when John Glenn and His wife dotted the "I". What a nice tribute to a Navy Man and a Citizen of OHIO. This is from a big Pac Ten fan. Like the way the Buckeyes and Midshipmen came out together. Much better the the behavior in the Boise State/Oregon game. Very enjoyable game although I was pulling for Navy.
