I need some Norfolk Island Pine (NIP) and know Florida have lots of it. Can anyone help me get a good deal on a few log sections? Preferred size is 10" in diameter or more.

If anyone wonders how it turns...check the latest CSUSA cover pic :)

Thanks!
Dario :)

Try Bill and Patty Sullivan in Fort Meyers, Florida. Their website is not up yet, but he's been selling NIP for some time. He's also a member of the AAW (www.woodturners.org) . You can reach them at 239-275-0135 or by email: woodweisel "at" aol "dot" com. As for how it turns, check with Doghouse. He's made a number of bowls, lampshades and platter from it.

Thanks Lou,

I am afraid I cannot afford commercial rates [V] and will only go taht route when all else failed.

I might also try Craigslist...though I doubt someone there will go through the hassle of mailing it to me.

Dario ...... I love turning NIP bowls. I bought a few on ebay awhile back. Not cheap. The desirable blanks are the ones with 5 or 6 branches coming off the blank on the same plane.
I'm interested in buying more also. Too bad we're not close to each other. We could split a pallet.

Al,

I have 2 short pieces and will work on those first. Will be making platters first to save (get 6 or so turnings from these). Hopefully, I will get a contact before those are gone.

I will let you know if I find a good source. [:)]

Hey D .... did you see the article in Woodturning Design on NIP? I have the issue here somewhere. But, if I recall, it was also online somewhere.

And check this out. NIP turned bowls selling for $4,850! That'll buy us a few pen blanks!!!!

Nope, didn't see it...but a good translucent piece may indeed sell as much since it takes as much as 7 months to properly finish!!! [:0][B)]

Hey D
Bill Sullivan is no longer selling wood. But, he's still turning. Meanwhile, my brother just moved to Florida .... he's on the lookout for NIP. I'll let you know if he comes up with anything.

Charles, Got a response from Sascha...he said he only buys off eBay. That avenue is shot for me. I'll try other means.

Al, Do let me know when you got some. I'll do likewise.

Dario .... my brother moved to Florida a couple of weeks ago. I called him yesterday and asked him to be on the lookout. I'll let you know when he comes across something.

Anybody have a picture of this? Sounds like it's pretty desired, so I'm wondering what it looks like. A piece for sale on ebay just doesn't do much for me, but maybe I'm missing something?

Angela,

It is used for bowls...not pens just in case you thought that way.

If you get the new CSUSA catalog...they have pics on the cover.

Try this link to see what Sacha makes at Woodnet. He is very talented artist...just been turning for a year or so. His products after turning 2 months are something I probably I will never be able to re-create.

Another site to check...
