flat rate box question

howdy

i thought the small 7x7x6 priority box and the 8 x5 1/4 box (video size) were flat rate ?
I think i was wrong cause it doesnt say flat rate on the box,

I have two boxs that say flat rate on them
11x 81/2 x5 1/2
11 7/8x 3/3/8 x13 5/8

are these the only two, oh yea what is the flat rate now a days..

If they have flat rate on them then they are the flat rate boxes. If they are the priority mail boxes then I believe you can go up to 4 lbs. (I think)
 
There used to be a small flat rate box that was the same price as the envelope; but it was eliminated a while ago in favor of the bigger boxes for $8.85. Maybe that is what is confusing??
 
You can still get the same effective service. Take those small boxes and stick them inside a flat rate envelope!! There are at least two different box sizes that will fit inside an envelope. The fit is very tight; but it can be done.!!!

If your paying $8.85 for a flat rate box your getting hosed.

Scott: I looked that up on the USPS web site. Guess I got the wrong information?? In any event, there is only one flat rate box currently available and the old $3.85 box or whatever it was is long gone.

Once again your information is incorrect; there is actually TWO flat rate boxes available:

Box-O-FRB1 with dimensions of 11" X 8.5" X 5.5"

Box-O-FRB2 with dimensions of 11-7/8" x 3-3/8" x 13-5/8"

You are correct that the $3.85 box is a thing of the past but it was never a flat rate box. It was $3.85 for up to a certain weight ( I think it was 4 lbs) anywhere in the US but that was all obsoleted when the PO went to the zone chart.
 
My post was perhaps a little unclear. Meant to communicate that there is only one flat rate for boxes. The $8.10 rate. And yes there are two sizes of box that will ship for that rate. We all agree that the smaller and cheaper box is no longer available.

BTW, there is also a weight limit on the current flat rate envelopes and boxes. Not likely to be a problem with the envelopes; but something to be aware of for the boxes.....70 lbs.

Also, give this a try. If you put your stuff in a flat rate box and it would actually cost less to mail it than $8.10, ask the clerk for the lesser postage. I've done this a couple of times. For me if it has to go past the Mississippi river it's usually cheaper to send it in flat rate box.
 
My flat rate boxes that go out average 10 to 15 pounds...everytime I drop the boxes off I check the regular cost...I save anywhere 2 to 3 times what a normal Priority box costs. If it a light package, it may cost less. My packages of Cocobolo are extrememly heavy, so for me it is a fantastic deal!
