I agree with frank. Go to a tackle shop and buy a couple of cheapos for a couple of bucks. Strip and reuse the components. The bodies would be very easy to turn. However, you will likely have better results with a store bought. I see your point though for creative ideas.

I agree with the price being way to high. But can buy a lot of the materials cheeper at hobby shops. Thanks for the info...Is there any other sites with lure making instructions?

I would likely start with a stock around 3" (For waste) long by 1" + square. A couple of options.

Turn it between centers.

Or...

Chuck the 3" piece in a scroll chuck and turn the shape. Part the waste end.

Or...

Turn a round tennon (Between centers) that will fit a round collet chuck (3/3"). Turn as you would if held in a scroll chuck. Part the nose end.

For the spoon or carved shaped faced ones, I would turn as above and then sand the shape into the face with a belt sander, or likely a drum sander (with the proper radius).

Have at it, and let us know how it goes.

Do a search for Janns Netcraft and Barlows Tackle. They have all the components and parts for making lures but a a much lower price than Penn State.

I just looked at the sets. Not sure if you knew though that those 19.95 kits make 10 lures.

For PSI stuff (Not that I use much of it) I buy from this Guy here. Gary Neeley is a very nice person.

I just bought everything you would need to make each of the four kits, making 10 of each lure, just as they offer at PSI. I bought from Janns Netcraft. I did save some money but not a lot. The price from PSI is not bad. Maybe I should have tried them first before I ordered enough for 40 lures. I sure hope I like making them though.
I carve wooden fish decoys and paint them. I am sure this will be a lot like that but much smaller. I want to do it more for the artistic part but I will give some away to some fishermen I know and see how they work. Let us know how you do.
