Ok why not go for the gusto all at one time.
here is my first time with 8 tubes I did all sorts or weird and crazy stuff to last night. ( I looked worse than Denise the menece when done)
So first off wow you don't need much resin at all. I thought I read 1 once well not even as I poured maybe half of the 8 once I prepared for 8 blanks.
(cool I trow the rest in a mold with a bunch of sprinkles just as a test to see what it would do... )

Now its in the toaster oven with the air compressor up against the table clamped the release on so it will keep running for vibration. while in oven. Fingers crossed this works since I do not have another heated vibration source.

anyone want to throw in the bets weather this works out??? PLEASE BET YES!!!! hahaha:cool:

just took a fast peak after 1 1/2 hrs looking good I think.. I want to pop them from the mold and look now ok may look yesterday!!!!!!!!!!!!

LOL .. yes, the mold should use about 1 ounce per cavity. (+/-) If you're doing Sierras,
that would be about 1/2 ounce per pen. (each cavity is two pens)

My bet is that it will work just fine.

You do know that you only need to vibrate for a couple of minutes, right? Just long
enough to shake loose any air bubbles that might be in there? I vibrate before I
pour and that seems to work just fine. Some vibrate after they pour and
that works, too. Sometimes you get air trapped in the mold just like the
bubbles that stick to the inside of a glass of Coke.. knocking on the glass
will make them rise to the surface. Same kind of thing here
But hey .. whatever works is good!!

ps .. good idea using the level. I can't tell you how many times
I forgot that..

I can never wait!!!!

Ok well now your bet was right!!! I am so right now and excited I am worse than a 4 year old waiting for Christmas day!!! Therefor I might of messed up something or its just my lack of skill. Here you will see Picture of blanks cast at 4:30pm today and its now 8 pm and here is a finished pen. WOW no 24 hrs for me!!!! just 1 1/2 toaster oven time plus a slow hand with a skew!!! Yes I am using a skew and casting all in a weeks time being here.

OK problems: might be my turning skill level or could the tube of not molded dead center. The final turn is way off from one side not even.

second problem ends seem to chip from mold but thinking that might be my rushed curing process to see what it was like..... ( after the first one I can wait now...)

I MUST SAY EVEN THOUGH THE PEN IS A TRAIN WRECK i AM VERY IMPRESSED TO THINK i MIGHT BE GETTING SOMEWHERE!!!!!

Wow.. I'd say you're getting somewhere fast!
I still can't handle a skew too well..

A couple of thoughts..
The resin might be set, but not cured yet. It should continue to harden
over the next day or two. That means that the torque from turning it
could cause a separation between the resin and the tube. If not, you're
good.. but you might end up with an air space between them.

Also, the mold is a little larger than the tubes. You should have had some
room at either end to center the tubes. So when it's cured, the resin will
be a little longer than the tubes. that allows you to sand back the ends
to get a good clean surface on each end. Plus, polyester resins shrink as
the cure.. so the molds are longer to accommodate the shrinking. that way
the tubes aren't bare when it shrinks.

Great work! are those stickers? labels? decals? You've got a nice variety
there.. and anything you can spit out of your printer is fair game
Logos .. signatures (that's a nice touch on a custom order..) photos..
scan some rare stamps and make a pen without wasting the stamps

Lets see more! I rarely get to see what people are making with the molds.

Alright I will be all ok to wait now for a bit at least. so no more rush before the cure.

all the tubes I painted with primer , than just looked around at what I had. one is frabic from some potholders another household artist was making. the rest are painted airbrushed or glitered up.... WOW!!!! I THINK YOU AND THE MOLD ARE AMAZING> HOWEVER the rest of my housemates might be on the war path although they love the finished products....

I am eating sleeping walking dreaming up ideas..... limiting myself with what I have all over my home. just to puch the limits of creative juices and not let easy buys take hold. I truely must have been related to Andy Worhal at one time in life. That may or may not be a good thing.... hahaha

They look great.

I've got my materials ordered, just waiting for the post office...
Congrats on your first cast. Well done...

Nice, I've always wanted to try casing my own blanks. I haven't gotten around to it yet, actually I haven't turned any pens in a while. I'm living in an apartment right now and the only way I can turn is by hauling my lathe out on the porch and sitting down, which I guess I could do but its a lot of work.

I am working on my second round now!!! wow this is bad I need 48 hrs in one day to get just 1 % of the ideas cooking in my wild crazy brain out....
