The last two pens I made - one last night, the other a week ago:
First picture: I got a great deal on 25 Amboyna (non-burl) blanks at Global Wood Source in San Jose - $25! This is the first one of this batch I've turned, and I just took it easy and used a Woodcraft platinum Euro kit.
As you can see from the next pic, I often make these without center bands and with closed ends, but I just went the traditional route - after all, I have 24 more of these blanks to experiment with
Second picture: Kingwood with ebony, with an aluminum accent (Diet Coke can recycling right there!) in between. This is probably from a slimline kit, but with none of the parts except the tubes, nib, and transmission. I use the Arizona Silhouette 7mm mandrel for the closed end.
Both finished with BLO/CA, then the full set of MicroMesh.
(Apologies for the photo quality - the photobooth is a component of my shop that's lagging These were taken with my iphone with diffused sunlight as the light source.)
About me: I make pens for fun and gifts mostly, live in Menlo Park, CA, and I'm a software product manager by day.
