I have been seeing a few natural edge bowls and plates on the site and elsewhere. My question, after turning nothing but pens, is how does one finish and polish a natural edge on a lathe. It seems that the hills and valleys of such an edge would create problems with trying to get an even sanding on it.

The most critical think about turning natural edged bowls/platters/plates, etc. is to take you time to visualize where the edges are actually spinning in relation to the tool rest the gouge and most importantly, your hands. As soon as you understand and know where those edges are when spinning, you just approach the blank with care. Don't use your hands to sand the bowl either outside and in particular on the inside, there are lots of different ways to do it safely, either using mechanical (electric) sanders or use those padded sanding blocks attached to a handle of some sort.

Don't be turned off by it, we all have to take some extra care when doing these type pieces, it becomes easier after we have done a few...!

If you have any other question just ask, there are lots of people here perfectly capable of giving the best advice!

Cheers
George

George, those are some great looking pieces. I've been blessed this Christmas with more than average sales on the web site and splurged for the tools I needed to start this next step in my turning career. Don't be surprised if you start getting pms from a little old South Texan trying to learn.
Thanks

Go for your life, ask as many questions you wish, I will see what I can do...!:biggrin:
