Finally tried worthless wood (Pictures Added)

I put some DI worthless wood in the classifieds and see not much interest in it so thought I'd play around with it myself. I'm not setup for pressure or vacumm but thought I'd give it a try anyway. I don't have a mold either and I seen somewhere before where someone used a beer carton to cast and then cut through it. Mine is a little more elaberate then that. I took a small box and lined it with wax paper. Worked great and the blank looks good mixed with orange paint and PR. I'll have to turn them tonight and see how the inside turned out. I may have to cancel my ad. LOL

Finally got the pictures in. The slimline was in the worse shape and as Brian said they needed way more coloring. I guess live and learn. And the satin euro ws a bad idea but it was a kit I had laying around. this blank turned out ok after the PR made it big enough to get ahold of to drill out. Love the colors in it This was easy enough to do.

Sounds great. It might be a bit brittle and require some care when drilling and spinning, but otherwise I'm sure it should work out great for you. Sometimes I just use masking tape. I tape the bottom and around the wood leaving the tape a good 1/2 higher than the wood like a dam and pour. For scrolling I always do that, because it is so much faster and cheaper in all aspects since you don't need to fit them squarely into a mold and no resin is wasted on the outside of the blank.

Welcome to the addiction.....just make sure you use WAY more coloring than you think you need. Practically everyone (no exception here) does their first few WW casts with too little dye.

Jeff I believe that I might try that next time as the stuff sets up quick enough that the tape wouldn't get too soggy I believe.

Brian I guess your right on the money with the not enough dye. I wanted an orange cast but got more of an opaque brown or similar. I'll let it finishing hardening till this evening before I make it into a pen.
And you are right I can see it even more addicting then plain penturning and that's addictive enough.

IMHO: Alumalite is a better choice in resin for the worthess wood blanks. From my experience it will adhere better to the wood than polyester resin. I look forward to your results. The ones I've turned made from PR had issues because the PR and wood interface failed. This has not happened from the ones I've turned that were made using alumalite. I've not made any myself...only turned blanks made by others. I wish you well and good luck.
Do a good turn daily!
Don

If you are having problems in the casting department, then I would highly recommend talking with Mr. Curtis O. Seebeck, or Mesquiteman as he is best known here on the IAP Forum. Mr. YoYo-Spin is a casting great as well.

Mesquiteman is the God father of casting in my book along with YoYo-Spin. Curtis has made some knock dead gorgeous worthless wood out of material that you just won't believe how worthless it would be otherwise. It's magic I tell ya, plain and simple, it's magic!

I'll post some pictures in a little while of a couple I turned. As Brian said I should have put in more color.

Correct Don. No vacumm or pressure, and this piece of wood was in bad shape I thought. The wood was 6X10 and as far as I can see without any bubbles and the cracks are filled. Just not colored in all the way. I know now to paint the inside of the holes before putting in the tubes. No way could I have drilled it without casting first. That little extra thickness to one side made alot of difference on where I could put the drill bit. Also saved a beautiful chunk of wood. My photography doesn't do it justice. Niether does the brushed satin pen kit. LOL
