I am going to try my hand at making a feather pen blank. I have read lots of articles about making them.

However, I haven't read anything about where to find these beautiful feathers everyone seems to have. And what types of feathers do you guys use/recommend?

I sure dont know all the answers but I do know you cant use Predator, Migratory or Song Bird Feathers. The only feathers I know of are Quail and Pheasant but I know there are many more. I think there are even species of Duck that can be used but I dont know which ones. I have some Pheasant that my friend brought back from hunting. Other than that I have no idea where to get any. I checked Ebay and most of what I saw was fake or really expensive. Once you get the feathers I think it becomes trial and error. I have glued up one blank but am waiting on my resin saver to cast it and turn it. I will only do one at a time until I find a glue stratagey that will work.

craft stores will often have them. Sometimes even fabric stores will
carry them.
If you want to try peacock feathers, wait till molting season.
Those suckers bite hard.

Give Blue Ribbon Flies a look

A full ring neck pheasant skin for about $10 …
If you are near a Bass Pro Shop they carry them for $13 with no shipping charge.
A good feather to start with might be an 'Indian Saddle Patch' about $5 @ BPS … they are not the best looking but they are relatively flat … simpler to attach to the tube.

We have a GanderMtn really close....I'd be better off chasing a chicken then going back there!

Fly fishing shops can order anything, but you pay for their rent when you do that. Just do a search on fly-tying feathers, and you should get about 12 million places to get some.

You can Only use domestic raised birds no matter what the species. You will need to keep your reciept of purchase, game farm tag or permit to prove it. All wild birds are illegal to use no matter what the species. Be safe and buy them.

Feathers

Hi, I am an old fly tying. Been tying flies since as was four yrs old. I am 67 now so you can guess on how many feather I have on hand. The one much used is Jungle ****. Use to be an endangered bird. If you would like to buy, trade or whatever let me know. Feathers are getting harder to come by since the girls started wearing them in the hair.
