I want to make a new pen for myself, and want to use one of the real nice kits for it. I'd like ball point with a finish that is silver in color. What are some of the really nice kits out there? Mu budget is under about $65. What woods (prefer a burl for this one) would look nice with that color finish??

I used to love Jr Gent II...with the new nib I have reservations now.

My new favorite for high end is Imperial...a bit big though.

I use a Jr Statesman every day and love the balance if the cap is posted. I am in the process of making myself an Imperial to use on a daily basis as well. It's a larger heavier pen style but the balance on it feels fantastic even though it won't post.

I use a couple cigars on a regular basis at work. When I am at home writing bills and what not I use a Baron Rollerball with a high end refil and italian resin blank. You might want to consider the JR Gent ball point, check for chigdon's work as this is his favorite, or for a larger ball point the Havana ball point. Both in Rhodium with a nice Amboyna burl blank.

I carry a full-size Emperor as my daily use pen. It's big and heavy, but it gets attention. I used to carry a Cigar, and then a Jr. Gent v1 Rollerball, and both were very nice. The screw-off cap gives it a very refined look. However, about a year ago I had occasion to use a full-size Gent for an 8-hour long writing session, and I have to say that the writing tip (the part that you actually hold) was the most comfortable I've used yet.

Jr. Statesman for me - Rhodium with Gold trim. mNot as big as the Emperor, but still gets plenty of attention and is more practical IMHO. My 4 favorite burls are Amboyna for a reddish color, Rosewood burl for dark brown, Deesert ironwood burl for a lighter briwn and olivewood burl for the lightest. My preference goes to a non posting cap.

I think you're going to be limited to "lower" end kits if you want to use a ball point. They're not bad kits, they just don't have the embellishments the higher priced kits have. Those will be rollerballs and fountain pens. If I'm using a ball point, I prefer the Parker refills. I think they write smoother.
As for wood, I like Amboyna, Desert Ironwood and Afzelia. I haven't been lucky enough to experience DI burl but I think that would be awesome, especially when used with a rhodium plating.

BTW, you can put some ballpoint refills in the rollerball pens. You may need to make a sleeve spacer to go over the tip, but I did it successfully for a client without any problems.

Hello,

I have made a couple of the Baron kits with some 'highly figured bubinga' I bought on ebay. Really nice looking wood. The Baron and Sedona from AZ Silhouette are my favorites.

The Jr. Gent. II or Statesman are always great choices. But, I recently made my first full-sized Gentleman and fell in love with the heft and feel and "Wow!" appearance. It shows off a nice piece of wood impressively. The Emperor is very costly and, if you aren't an experienced turner should probably avoid for a while. The burls are always eye candy, matter of personal choice which one.
