Hi all,

I heard about this on the radio today:

http://tinyurl.com/2xhskm

The chestnut tree that Anne Frank wrote about in her diary that brought her comfort and hope for freedom may be cut down because the tree has become so diseased.

In all likelihood they won't cut it down until they have exhausted every resource.

If it does get cut down I wonder if they will make any of the wood available.

Joking aside

If the tree 'had' to come down what better way to remember Ann Franks than by turning the tree into pens, to allow others all over the world to remember her as they write in their own diaries with pens made from the tree that was so special to her

I shot the Ann Frank organization a query on tree remains. http://www.annefrank.org/content.asp?PID=813&LID=2

Here is an extract:
3. What will happen to the felled tree?
The Anne Frank House is not the owner of the chestnut tree, and therefore has no say over what happens to it after it is cut down. The owner of the tree, together with the Amsterdam City Centre Neighbourhood Council, has decided that the tree will be shredded, and we understand this decision.

Sad loss...

maybe one of our european friends can just go hang around when the tree goes down and see what they can come away with... [:)]

I understand the decision too, it's a lousy one! Imagine someone cutting down George Wanshington's cherry tree and shredding it! Assuming he really didn't cut it down.
I guess there just wasn't any thought about it. Hard to believe that the Amsterdam City Centre Neighbourhood Council could not find somoe woodworker to make a table out of it or something and put it in a museum. What a shame.

sound to me like they are taking the easy answer. Just destroy it rather than take the time and effort to make a real decision. to bad it is not in Reno. City council cannot remove a sidewalk around here without some group crying about it's historical value lol.

An historic tree came down from the White House property about a year ago and it ended up in the chipper. Keep in mind, these decisions are made by bureaucrats and bureaucrats do not think like normal folks. Illogical decisions actually seem sensible to them.

I saw this tonight on my MSN homepage.

The chestnut tree that gave Anne Frank a link to the outside world while she hid from the Nazis won a reprieve Tuesday when a judge ordered the city to reconsider whether the diseased tree can be saved.
