Hi,

I have been slowing down all my shop projects over the last month, well except one. In the fall the shop becomes a place where sometimes I have seen the odd field mouse . trying to make a winter home. This year it seems with the decline in predatory wild life that we have an abundance of field mice. In the past I controlled the problem by setting out some traps and that takes care of any problems. Well, it’s different this year, it’s become an adventure.

I started out with my usual traps, they were effective but I was shocked that they were filled every day. So, I switched to adding some rodent poison along with the traps. They seemed to like it as they ate it all and the traps were also busy. So I switched to poison type B for those that were not effected by type A, well, they ate all of that one, even tipping the box over and tearing through the remaining contents. So I switched to Type C, and the traps are empty and they keep eating…and oh, one of the traps is missing…..I wonder how Big this last one is!!

If I’m not back in a day call 911

OMG Shannon!!! People might just have a can of soda in hand when you post something like that! Man, that hurts in the nose! I have to remember that... "Ball Bearing Mousetrap" I love it. [:D]

The problem with poison is that they might eat it and then go and die somewhere you cannot reach easily - eventually you will find these spots, just follow the smell...
I had the same problem for years in my garage, but I always trapped them, peanut butter is the best bait. Once I set two traps (and always tie them down with a wire or so, something they cannot bite through if they are not killed by the trap) and went inside in the powder room next to the garage to wash my hands - within a minute or two I heard the first trap go off, and then I waited for some time and the second went off as well.

Jim, we have several extra mouse catchers around here that you are welcome to come get! LOML seems to occassionaly feed every stray that comes to the door, and they have a habit of hanging around so come get 3 or 4 if you want to. BTW, I no longer have a rat or mouse problem in my shop which is next door. Also, before anyone else jumps in, Yes, that is how I was caught by LOML also.

Just one caution about getting a kitty. Once you give the mice poison, the cat eats the mouse and gets poisoned too :-( On a funnier note, I have two cats that used to be great mousers. now I find them actually playing with the mice. I think i got Tom and Jerry here

You have never seen a mouse plague until you see an Australian mouse plague!
One method that was employed here to combat mice was to crush up sleeping pills and mix that with food. Since mice have a very high metabolic rate they need to eat often or they starve. The pills put 'em to sleep and they simply die of starvation in their sleep.
IMHO a cat is a pretty useles animal when it comes to mice. They will catch a few and become bored or jot toy with a half dead mouse for ages while other mice go about their business.
A better option is a Fox Terrier dog they will seek and destroy mice almost endlessly
