Yesterday from work at lunch I googled an old friened that I had lost contact with years ago and noted that she was on Facebook. As such sites are blocked at work I waited till I got home and finally broke down and created a Facebook acct so I could send her a message.

After entering my email address, High School and University I was sent to a page where they presented me with an initial list of four "Friends"

The first "Friend" was the woman in question! The second "Friend" was a good friend a few towns away, and the third "Friend" was DCBluesman!

On the computer that I used to create my Facebook acct, I had never sent any of these folks an email, nor had I ever Googled any of them or gone to their websites. They were not in any address book on this computer.

I did not go to school with any of these folks, and the woman in question was born in Russia and lives in Canada. I was born and live in the US.

None of these folks refer to me on their Facebooks

I thought this was darn spooky!

You'd be surprised what they can gather from just those couple of pieces of information. What I BELIEVE is the biggest tie is that you are given the chance to upload your address book to find friends.

You may not have any of them in YOUR address book, but if you are in theirs.... Then facebook "remembers" those ties for later! Then looks that up as suggestions. That combined with some other things (did you give birthday?!) Its pretty easy to get some basics... and then they can tie together well.

Definately a bit freaky at first though... The "cloud effect" is a bit stunning when you start to realize what people give up for info...

I suggest that you carefully review the rules pages for what they can do and share and turn of things like "use my info in ads" because it can be really deceptive what they pull.

LOL I just told my wife the same thing as I opened one yesterday and I had 87 friends on the first page of possible friends and since today I have have gotten an additional 17 request...

Eric,
The second friend should not be me, because I still do not have a facebook account. It is funny though, because I have recieved friend requests from a couple of our other club's members, who say they did not send anything to me, as they know I do not belong.

Jerry

p.s. see you in work tomorrow

Ah, that must explain it, the email address I gave is my work email not my home, and I have corresponded with all three from work.
